Hello was wondering some opinions on an upgrade. Currently have a gtx 780 and leaning towards getting a gtx 1060, rx 480 or r9 fury nitro which is on sale right now on Amazon. I use 1080p @ 120hz. Thanks!
r9 fury is stronger card among what you mentioned. However be careful with fury if your monitor DVI only, most models doesn't have DVI port. 480 performing better than 1060 in most cases and 8GB is more preferable than 3/6GB of 1060. If you considering saving, consider AMD 470. It has very close performance to 480 and could be found much cheaper. For 1080p 4GB GRAM is enough, unless you heavily modding games. ---------------------------------- EDIT : If you want to enjoy demanding games on max quality and to match your panel refresh rate (120fps) with VSYNC, you might want to consider GTX 1070. And I guess your monitor doesn't support FreeSync or Gsync?
No it does not support either. The r9 fury I was looking at is the sapphire nitro one so it does support dvi also for my monitor.
Well, I guess its then up to your preferences. With your CPU and good overclock you should be able to get 120fps in most games. To get 120 fps with GPUs below, you have to adjust video settings: - GTX1070 : highest settings - Fury : high/highest settings. - AMD480 : medium/high settings. If you don't mind turning down some settings, AMD480 might be enough. Fury will allow you to have better visuals while keeping sweet 120fps.
Iam in a similar situation myself...Buddy of mine wants to sell me his Getz 980 for $150 bucks, when I see what's out there and price wise it seems like a Steal to be honest! I wish I could afford to drop $700+ on a new video~card.
^ Get that and OC to 1450-1500, this should be around stock 980Ti. @ Thread starter get that Fury! 480x can be too limited at times, probably because of 32ROPs.
Basically do some research yourself before this topic degradates into fanboy argument. Choose between GTX 1060 / RX480, thats about it.
I've done a lot of research on the three each has pros and cons just getting opinions and seeing what other people use.
If you simply want performance go for R9 fury its on average 10-15% faster than 480, however its ( imo ) good only for now, its not future proof. 4gb vram, hot, power hungry, price. 480 on the other hand has a bit more future proof aspects, 8gb vram, less power hungry, cooler, cheaper. gtx 1060 is sort of a middle ground with 6gb (at 1080p should be enough for a while ), cool during load, low power consumption and good overclocking potential. However loses (currently) to 480 at dx12/ vulcan scaling. I would go for 1060, with overclock you can reach performance of r9 fury, for cheaper price and less heat. It's more or less solid middle ground for this cash. We don't know what's around the corner, we might see vulcan / dx12 revolution, if that's the case Currently AMD is leading and you should go for rx 480, however you never know. Maybe Nvidia will release better drivers/ more games will support Dx12/Vulcan from scratch, then gtx 1060 will clearly lead here. Hence why i say either 480 or 1060, however i'd pick 1060 myself as for current / past titles it's more or less a solid middle ground performance. OC it to 2ghz and you will be happy.
Keep in mind cryohellinc has a Nvidia card himself, so he could be biased towards the Nvidia option . I second the RX 480. If you game at 1080P only, there is a 4 GB version of the RX 480 that is a bit cheaper. It all depends on how long you want to keep it for. There has been information suggesting there are a few more nice changes to graphics tech over the next year or so, so the argument of 'future-proof' is moot. It might run games in 2018 (just over a year away), but it will probably be outshined by cards released that year. Potentially even the cards next year! If you can save a reasonable about of money on the 4 GB RX 480, go for that, then upgrade later if that is an option for you. I think it would currently be the most suitable from a price, usage, and future tech release perspective.
