There is a new Polaris GPUS SKU on the loose. As you guys know Nvidia released the GeForce GTX 1050 and Ti, and there is a bit of a gap in between that Ti and the Radeon RX 470. Sapphire is the first...

I very much doubt AMD will allow these to be flashed they will more than likely laser cut the shaders.

Marginally better ? I'd call the 1050 over RX460 marginally better. The 470D is 38% faster in tomb raider and 36% in The Division. That is not marginally.

2 games... so "marginally better" fit :)

if it was at least 60% of the game it would be "better".

But when you see that GTX1050 is cheaper than any RX460 for now, i don't think they will do the RX470D cheaper than the RX460... and so fit the graphic power gap, but i don't think it would find it's place.

i don't know wich one would be better, the cutted polaris 10 or the full polaris 11 (RX465 ???) wich is rumored... we will see.

    "Marginally better" because nVidia. ;)

RX 470 series is much better than Gtx 1050 TI,ever.
But RX 470D will be launched in China,so when will be available in the wild the price will matter.

Hot damn, aside from the core count the 470D is actually faster.

    wat?

By your logic the 980ti/1070/FuryX are marginally better than the 480/1060

I would even bet that the 470D minimum fps are near the 1050's average.

I'm not sure why the release of this would hurt AMD. Back in the Phenom II days, people would intentionally buy triple cores for 2 reasons:
    1. There was a good possibility of unlocking it, where you get a quad core for a much lower price.
    2. Even if you didn't unlock the last core, you got a proportionately larger L3 cache per core and the CPU was still good enough for the price (at the time, most games still only needed 2 cores, where the 3rd core could be used for background tasks).
I get the impression this 470D is no different than these old triple cores. All AMD needs to concern themselves with is getting a bigger market share. Even if people don't buy the more expensive component, they're still making sales.

Anyway, it seems to me that the PCB has all of the same components as the 470 but they're just slightly rearranged. I don't understand why they didn't design the 470 to have this same layout.

So the GPU volumes available are good but not that huge?, AMD would love to sell that same GPU housed in the RX 470 and RX 480 for RX 470/480 prices. RX470D would invoke them dropping the price matching 1050 Ti and thus they make less revenue on the same part.

True, but that's only one of many possible scenarios.
As has already been proven, the price is abstract; the hardware itself between each tier is hardly (if at all) any different. If the 470D can so effortlessly be a 470 or maybe a 480, AMD is effectively just gaining a little extra cash just simply because of a name. Obviously, if someone was planning on getting a 480 and realized they could save maybe $50 or so on this hack, then sure, that's a loss to AMD.

But, let's say someone wanted a 480 or 470 but those were out of their budget. So, they look at a 1060 or 1050 Ti instead. That would be a complete loss to AMD. However, if someone could get the performance of a 480 or 470 for a price close to (maybe even lower than) a 1050, AMD would likely get the sale. Sure, they're making less money, but in their eyes it's better than Nvidia getting all of the cash instead.

it might be chips that are faulty and can not be 470 or 480 and function fine as the new 470D most of the times that's what the the lower numbered products of the same waffer (polaris 10 in this occasion are) so if that's the case isn't this economically better ? instead of throwing away the gpu selling it as a lower part of the family

    *edit*
for example i used to have a phenom 2 720 this cpu is still alive and kicking on my brothers rig unlocked to 4 cores and running under a ninja 2 on 3.1 ghz on all 4 cores but here is the catch unlocking the 4th core for some reason breaks the thermometer the temperature indication is stuck at 0 as long as the 4th core is working other than that the cpu works like a charm like that last 3-4 years ((the motherboard i had could not unlock cores at the time ))

Agreed - it is definitely a gamble. But I get the impression that usually companies these days will laser-cut the die so you can't attempt to unlock it. Makes me a bit skeptical as to why this particular GPU isn't like this. It's been a while since I've heard of a weaker GPU that wasn't laser-cut. Regardless, I personally have no interest in getting this GPU. Maybe back when I was in high school on a budget I'd have considered it though.

I once had an Athlon II x3, which I unlocked into a Phenom II x4 (which was weird, since it still didn't have an L3 cache). The interesting part is the CPU was fully functional, except in 64-bit mode. Rock solid and overclockable, as long as I ran a 32-bit OS. Funny how the thermometer stopped working in your CPU.

i never heard amd laser-cutting 6950 turning to 6970 phenom's x2 and x3 turning to x4 Athlons turning to phenoms or have the rest of their cores alive and a guy from a forum in my country actually brought 3 phenoms x2 550 till he found one fully functional with 4 cores he sold the ones that where not functional with all 4 cores 5 euros less than what he brought em with in a week ..about the thermometer well it works again when you disable the 4th core but is ok the hwmonitor gets a temperature reading from the motherboard slot you add 5 degrees to be safe since its closer to that normally and you are gold !

I wonder what is the power consumption of this thing.
The regular 470 has a 120W TDP and can be lowered to about 100W undervolting.
If I remember well the Sapphire Nitro in quiet mode has a 150W TDP, like the reference 480, and raises to about 190W in boost mode.
The 470D has an higher GPU clock and memory clock compared to the reference 470, so probably has an higher power draw too.

    edit:
The 1050 TI has a 75W TDP. For the guys who want a GPU good enough for 1080p, low power consumption and a cooler case NVIDIA stays a better choice.

Faster than 1050 Ti but still needing 100 Watts more to achieve that.. GG.

oh i was not aware that 1050 consumes only 20 watts

that aside it uses 45 watts extra for roughly what the slides show above 38%((and IF they are true estimate)) extra performance so if it was 1:1 ratio per fps a 1055ti with the same performance would need 103.5 watts to get that performance ... so yeah that 16.5 watts is a big deal is like 10 cents a month extra on the power bill ! whoo we dodged a bullet on that one

ps : i know this is not analog at all and there are other factors like what memory consumes etc

My 470 never goes over 90 watts and usually hovers at around 78.
