Cold war, if you were born just before or just after the Berlin(1989) wall fell then this will be new to you, but this kind of thing had been going on since the end of WW2.
I don't get the aging nuclear arsenal talk. Regardless how long ago these bombs were made, when the explode they are still going to go boom.
Well its like Trump said, what's the point of having nukes if you don't use them. So why don't we use up all of our older lower powered nukes before spending billions on new ones.
It's just scaremongering, what's new. The bombs for their time were very well engineered and simple. Not to mention our "aging arsenal" puts what the Russians have to shame. The heavy hitters are the Trident II class missiles that are carried on nuclear submarines. The Russians have no way to counter them and no way to find the subs reliably. They have no answer for it. I wouldn't even call the Trident II's old, they were designed in the 90's and got upgrades in the mid 2000's. Even the relatively old Minutemen III ICBM's are still on standby as they've always been. They can't be hacked, they're very quick and hard to intercept, and capable of delivering a world of pain. They were engineered at a time when rocketry was at its peak. The Saturn V is one of the best rocket designs ever made, and is the only rocket to ever deliver a human payload to the moon. And that came out slightly before the Minutman 3 program.
