@pharma, yeah...i kinda agree. Besides, overclocking RX480 to 1.42Ghz w/o vmod kinda sounds like a fairy tale I mean, default max volt. locked at 1150mV...and judging by the reviews i've read, RX480 can't be safe oc'ed past 1.4Ghz due to volt. limit. Even for custom PCB/HS cards like PowerColor Radeon RX 480 RED DEVIL and such. And let's not forget - full load power consumption OC'ed RX480 to 1.4Ghz on gpu/ 8.8Ghz on vram/ with 1150mV and increased power limit will be around 300+W and with high heat output too... Compared that to reference GTX 1060 OC capabilities; temps (even with ref. cooler); power draw at full load; and in-game performance. I think it's a no-brainer
Would a Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 1060 be a good upgrade from my PNY GTX 780? I only play at full hd 120hz for all my games. Thanks!
It would better if you reach for 1070. Either way, 1060 will be a nice upgrade. Kepler isnt doing good lately.
I'm almost certain that I'll get EVGA GTX 1060 SC. I've done some reading and it looks like even potato can cool this thing efficiently. The cooler is in SC is definitely better than in the cheapest cards but it's still way, way cheaper than, say, Strix which is totally not worth it. The availability for all Pascal cards is really good now but sadly EVGA seems to have problems getting enough cards for retailers.
Ordered a 1060 strix for my brother on 7/22. But Amazon still doesn't have it in stock. Why put up a page on release day if you aren't gonna sell the ****in thing?
Just built a PC for a friend and his son using this ASUS 1060 DUAL 6GB. Played with it a bit. Such a great card for the price paid. It crushes anything at 1920x1080. Was originally going to use a RX480 in this build but they don't exist 1060 is GP106 1070/80 is GP104. They could cut one more cluster on the 1070 GPU and throw it on a 192bit bus with 6GB of VRAM, but why? There is no point. There will likely be no 1060Ti.
Sold it because I got actually more out of it that I though possible. Besides, Gigabyte is rather meh. Three flimsy fans running at 1550 RPM while doing nothing is pretty bad (total brain fart design). I want something semi-passive and VP9 hardware decoding. The extra VRAM doesn't hurt either and I'm pretty sure it's going to be quieter in games too.
Of course there is no point in further cutting the chip, once you start labeling something as high end there is no turning back.
It's a little more than a side grade for you but not much more. Are you just getting this to hold you over until the 1080Ti?
Like I posted above it has few improvements that I like compared to that particular Gigabyte GTX 970. I'm not going to upgrade to 1080 Ti. This should be good enough until GTX 1170 comes out (and then I can upgrade my monitor to high refresh rate 1440p monitor, at that time there are probably HDR monitors out there too).
I get that.I was just referring to raw performance not AIB partner board quality. I love my 1070SC I still have not heard the fans. That ASUS i posted about above is nearly silent as well.
I'm actually a bit surprised that even my current piece of sheit is quieter than that Gigabyte... AFAIK both cards use about as much power but the cooler on the EVGA is better. It should be rather quiet card. EDIT: Meh... Ended up ordering GTX 1070 with ACX 3.0 cooler from EVGA directly.
I honestly think the pascal buyers are busy gaming, rather than comparing/justifying their purchase.:nerd:
Received my MSI 1060 gaming recently. Compared to the previous MSI twin frozr 7950, it is huge. But had no issue fitting it with lots of clearance in my CM Storm Trooper case even with 2 120mm fans installed in the side panel directly blowing into the GPU. Idle temp is in the 32-34 C range with fans completely off. With max load the highest I have seen it go is 64 C (for a short period of time). Generally it is in the 60 - 62 C range, which is outstanding I would say. Also, I have a hard time hearing the gpu fans, it is that silent. Performance wise, it is similar to stock 2x7950 but a bit slower than my overclocked 2x7950 at 1920x1200. But since I have everything vsync'd at 60 fps, it hardly matters. The card is able to play every game at 60 fps at max settings (except 1 or 2 games where I have to use 4xAA instead of 8xAA, lol). I have not overclocked the card yet, as I dont feel the need for it yet. Also, waiting on a stable MSI afterburner release with pascal support, before testing it out. The card boosts to around 1930 or so but it is difficult to monitor clocks right now as the OSD in AB does not work for most of the DX11 games. I have only tried the last WHQL drivers, 368.81 on Windows 10.0.10586. Currently waiting for new WHQL drivers supporting anniversary addition, then I will clean install the anniversary addition. I would compare it to my previous gpus as follows: 1. 2x7950 > Ran hot, upper gpu reached around 78-80 C overclocked (1075/1575), 1060 runs very cool. 2. 2x7950 > Very noisy when playing GPU intensive games, 1060 > DEAD SILENT!!! 3. 2x7950 > System power consumption around 500 - 630 Watts, depending on workload, game type. 1060 > Highest I have seen the power comsumption go is around 282 Watts!!. Remember it is whole system power consumption, not just GPU. This is my first Nvidia GPU, and so far I have been very impressed. I did initially want a RX 480 but went for 1060 due to it being out of stock everywhere. I think this 1060 will be enough to keep me happy until I decide to go for a higher res/refresh monitor.
