Yes, that's my main problem with it, and not so much the quite poor cooler they once again slapped on a card making it running too noisy and too hot. Sadly, the price has gone way up too, so for me it will be waiting for about one month and see what happens during that time. I might even pick up a 4GB card to save a bit, as the card won't last very long anyway on 1440p. Vega must deliver so much more, I hope it won't be double of 480 in energy use but I expect nowhere near the same efficiency as 1080. Sadly.
If the PCI-E power issue gets sorted, this is going to be a really good card at the price. As for the power issue...no one really knows for sure if it was the test cards or not. This might of been solved with the shipping units.
It uses less power, yes but they are using 14nm compared to 28nm, so it will be very bad if it uses the same W haha I`ll stick to my R9 290x cross for now ... nothing interesting ... waiting for the big chips to show up ~250w with better performance than my crossfire setup
I know right! The only rx 480 I can find online is going for $250 at the cheapest. I can find multiple 970's going for the same price on Amazon.
comparable AMD cards use way more power. Most power efficient card ever made by AMD, indeed. If it wasn't, it would be a total ****ing failure.
can you show me the multiple 970's for $250.00 ?? i just see around 20 offers starting 289.99$ ... and above. a single low boost clock Asus is there for 260$ but thats it.
lol, yeah cuz that extra vram is really helping in the benchmarks. You don't need 8GB to game at 1080p which is a territory this sorry excuse for a card should never stray from.
I would agree with you but the fact you are still looking at the argument from the enthusiast looking in. Mainstream could care less about fps. Is the game playable? And that is subjective in and of itself. FPS is a metric only high-end/enthusiasts really take stock in. All it is, is a number like THD in mainstream audio gear. All that is cared about is does it sound good to the listener...that is it. All that matters is that the game is playable for the end consumer using the card. What "our" thoughts on playable has no bearing. It is irrelevant. That is why it is entertaining to see how many add to this conversation expecting the card to have current, 2016, high-end performance. AMD always said it was a mainstream offering; A laptop chip that has the ability to perform in the value desktop segment. The best tie-in was the reference to the whole Fermi toaster card. AMD now has their toaster/egg cooker, but with better performance.
why are there so many 1-post accounts all of a sudden :bugeye: this new release seems to lure many new users
there is no denying that the price of this card is really great. I remember when i got a GTX 480 coming from 9600gt. GTX480 was few years old card and i got it refurbished for $220 which is around the price of this card maybe slightly less. This was at the time when GTX680 was already out i believe. All this being said i was still hoping this new AMD 480 would match GTX980 easily in most titles which doesnt seem to be the case right now. I will wait for custom cards and see what they deliver but my heart is still going towards 1070 even though bang for the buck AMD wins with this card. I just need a little more performance for my brand new PC build that i put together few months ago.
