I hate to admit it but it really does like look SLi is dead... The fact that the 1080 has 8GB of FB is what made the decision for me. Sadly now that we are stuck with lazy devs who code with consoles and their 8GB of shared memory in mind, we have seen that huge amounts of VRAM are needed to get acceptable framerates from any of the console ports; pure GPU power seems to me to be less relevant than the memory attached to it. My GTX 680s and Hexacore 3930K are certainly more powerful than either of the consoles' APUs but they struggle with Quantum Break and Forza 6 Apex (both free on Win 10 I hasten to add, I'd never buy either on PC!) at 1080p when the both look great on the underpowered Xbone.

I'm not ready to be done with PC gaming yet, but it seems I'm gonna have to have to go with the latest and greatest GPU to beat the humble AMD Jaguar at 1.6GHz .......

Now the new drivers are out this is an accurate test, is this 2x performance promised?

Compared to what? The only 2x comparison was to a Titan in VR. We don't have VR 1080 benchmarks so how are we supposed to validate that?

They also made the claim that it was faster than 980SLI, I guess you can test that.

Poor question. I'm asking whether this is indicative of 2x performance.

    My bad.

SLI dead ? Not by far. These puppies will be used in 4K, 8K and triple 4K and 8K scenarios, and then even in SLI they'll wheeze, just as current cards do in triple 1440p.

So basically they took advantage of the 16nm chip and overclock the sh!t out of it. I would like to see the 1080 vs. 980ti running at the clocks the 980ti is, probably would not able to beat it. Anyway i would not buy this, i don't see any improvements, just high core clock.

@isidore And do the same with a 780ti and 980 and see how that goes.

26.5K in firestrike. Impressive. Definitely getting 2 or 3 of these cards!

SLI being dead I disagree because with the new SLI bridge technology and with the 8gb VRAM 2 1080s would be ideal for 4k gaming and multi monitor setups.

as much as i love getting the latest hardware i think i will pass on this one. firestrike score is impressive though but i already got really playable fps in games, so what benefit would i get from it? even more playable fps? since i`m playing @ 1440p my TX should last at least to the point when 1080ti or titan bla bla bla or whatever they`ll call it will be released

Eesi: You're right in your thinking. IF your Titan X already gives you what you need and you are happy w/ it, there is no reason to switch.

I, personally, am going to sell my Titan X for $600 USD and get a 1080 (maybe 2 but I've been spoiled by how wonderful 1 bleeding edge card works over buggy micro-stuttering SLI). I had two GTX Titan Blacks and switched over to a single Titan X and while it was a bit slower, I had so many LESS issues in games.

Nope ,they said 2x faster then 980 SLI , not 980ti.

Honestly, Untill I see what this can do in DX12 and 4K I'm not buying anything.
Even then, I might just wait till OCT for AMD;s Vega so then I can compare.

I do want a 4K capable card though, from either camp I dont care if its NV or AMD. Couldnt care less. Just give me the best dam performace per $ for my money. If it cant do 4K , im not interested. Not gonna buy or spend $600 bucks now and then again in 6 months or so. No fkn way.:)

They will be over $1000 here (Australia).

980Ti retail for around $1000 currently at our cheapest retailers.

    980 are around $700.

can't you try to get a cheap deal by making a private deal via ebay and mark the parcel as "gift"? $1000 is really... wow.

well at least you have sheep and kangaroo steak :)

I sold my other 390X because I cant stand all the problems and unstability it has...

Always but always buy a single card...

Trust me... you will be happier :)

Been using SLI for about 3 years now. Only occasional obscure game with problems. You use a very broad brush stroke there.

Pretty much confirms that OC'd GTX 980 ti = GTX 1080 stock (except for DX12 titles where I think the newer hardware scheduler is going to make a difference). OC's GTX 1080 is probably going to end up ~20% faster.
