So I just got the asus r9 390, installed it in my case, the. Got to lookin at all the wires. The R9 has an 8 and 6 pin connector. The card came with a 2x 6 pin to 1x 8 pin converter. My 1000w PSU, an old school xion axp-1000r14he, has 2 available 6 pin connectors. I think it may have come with 6+2 pin cables, but if so, they are in storage 17hrs away. What do I plug in to where? A 6 pin to 6 pin connector, and a 6 pin to 8 pin connector? A 6 pin to 2x6 pin-8pin adapter and a 6 pin to 6 pin connector? Both 6 pins to the adapter? Really don't want to fry this thing fresh out of the box lol
Try plug the 6+2 Pin from line 12v (that one with MOLEX) and second 6pin into Fan. Don't use 6pin into 8pin !!!!!! Make use of -> http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/t...wer-connector-when-gpu-has-8-pin-slot.214058/
So basically, you do not have the required setup to run this card. The 2x 6pin > 8 pin takes 2 separate 6 pins from the PSU to make the 8 pin out put. That leaves you with a 6pin on the GPU cable-less. You will either have to go get it from storage or order 6+2 cables. BTW XION PSUs are garbage and i wouldn't risk that in my system, you may know that already though.
Eh, the XION has treated me well for 6 years, no problems . Would I get another one? No, from what I've read, like you said, currently they are garbage. Since my storage is 17hrs away and finding a modular cable that would fit is proving quite difficult, and seeing as the PSU is 6 yrs old, recommendations for a new PSU? Currently specs are same as to left, except the GPU being R9 390 now, and 12gb same ram rather than 6gb. Thinking a 750w, would like to stay about $100 range Something like this perhaps: http://m.newegg.com/Product?itemNumber=17-371-079&Keyword=Antec edg 750 I did notice the ATX12V doesn't say 2.2... Does that matter?
ATX 2.2 standard came out in 2006ish, safe to say something that old wouldnt still be selling. Anyways, plenty of good options out there to consider. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...m_re=evga_power_supply-_-17-438-017-_-Product thats a good one for the price. other brands to stick with, seasonic, superflower, bequiet, enermax etc. That antec seems so-so.
