Well, at least with the AMD cards the fan is still spinning, albeit slowly. Also, the cards shut down when they got too hot, didn't the Nvidia cards just continue until they stopped working?

That was a good thing with those cards, wasn't it? It saved you having to bake the card in the oven like it was commonly required with whose Nvidia's at the time.

There's no saving grace here that ups one over the other.

I think you've "tested" it about as far as most users here would be willing to. :)

Maybe first 8800GT with G84 core, but later revision of 8800GT with G92: no way you could reach those temps. OK, maybe it's possibe in badly ventilated case. Had them both backthen, G84 & G92.

8800GT was G92 based from day 1... 8600GT and 8600GTS were the G84 based cards.

Contest for hottest card ever in Hot-Fix thread. I love it :)
Top of my list: I would say HD 3850 (One slot version). That little heatsink was supposed to cool down 95W TDP card...

2nd best in my hands was BFG 9800 GTX. While it was not high TDP (165W) card, its cooling was 'probably' marketing error.
    - It was heaviest graphics card I ever had in my hand, heatsink was so huge and so much metal was used, but cooling capacity was very low.
    - When this thing overheated, it took 25minutes for it to cool down passively (with PC off) before you could keep hand on heatsink.

But in contest for best space heater, it would be pretty boring since our newest and greatest are winners here.

Nothing better than burning birthday cake. Do you have video? Preferably with people singing.

Nah, I think I burned that too...

returning to topic, any ETA on the hotfix?

EDIT: someone apparently spotted it already and when trying to download Crimson software from AMD you get an error.
So I'm guessing they're actually replacing the faulty 15.11 with the hotfix driver at the moment.

You're right man, those G84 were 8600GT I had also in son's PC but it wasn't much hot, but iirc 8600GTS I had also was much hotter. Also I had shortly one 8800GTS stock blower, hate to google right now but iirc it was also G84 and hot and loud as hell. Few days later traded her for Gigabyte 8800GT G92 factory OC'ed with nice Zalman copper cooler and it was much cooler and it OC'ed 740MHz for GPU or a bit more and 1480MHz for shader. Fantastic card it was...

On topic, any news/links about hotfix?

They've updated Crimson Legacy drivers for 5xxx and 6xxx series also, from 15.11 Beta to 15.11.1 Beta. Need to check those few rigs at home running 6450/5770/6770/6970 where I've switched to Legacy Crimson 15.11 few days ago. Guess they are not affected because on all of them MSI AB 4.1.1 is there with custom fan curve.

    The 8800GTS 320mb, 8800GTS 640mb, 8800GTX, 8800Ultra were all G80 based.

    The 8800GS, 8800GT and 8800GTS 512mb were G92 based.

The 8600GT and 8600GTS were the only G84 based cards. NVidia never released a G84 based 8800 series card.

8400 GS, but you are right that there are no G84 based 8800 cards.
