I think this will be the last time I go with SLI. I don't mind some of the minor headaches, since even when SLI doesn't work, a 980ti is pretty powerful, but I miss my much smaller MATX/ITX cases and how tiny and powerful I could make my computer.
Simply anser get the gtx 980 ti u can always upgrade later for sli, and its not a 3.5 vram card like the gtx 970 period.
This is the best answer out of all I seen posted. If I sold my GTX970 on ebay for say $280 (locally here used PC parts don't sell) I would lose at least 12-13% in paypal/ebay fees. Then, I have $240 to put down on a GTX980Ti. If I went for one with 3rd party cooler I would be paying out of pocket at least $420-$450. For me it was a no brainer to pick up a used GTX970, that I got for $250 shipped.
Traded my 970s for a 980ti and have no regrets. They were definitely a little faster but some games, like witcher 3, run better on the 980. Minimum fps are a bit better and worth the trade off on the max end imho
I'd go for a single GTX 980Ti. Less power, less heat, less noise and sli profile worry free. Just my opinion...
Depending on how much you would get for the 970 and how much you got money to spare. Either is a fine choice. I would personally get another 970 for a bit more power.
I've owned both and I'd say that where games do support SLI and have great scaling (like DA:I for example) 970 SLI is faster but that's the only benefit really. 980Ti is faster in Single GPU mode for games that don't support SLI 980Ti is quieter and cooler than 970SLI 980Ti is a bit cheaper (if you don't own 970 to start with) 980Ti has less problems than 970 SLI which is totally dependent on working SLI profiles If you already got a 970, it might be worth picking up another one (cheaper) but you'll be glad getting a 980Ti due to less hassle overall.
Doubtful as they are faster now, not much but measurable. On release gm204 release 780ti sli was a bit faster again not much.
Well, I bit the bullet and grabbed a zotac 980ti reference for $850 (CDN) and it shipped already. I love NCIX. Anyway, its been an expensive day..grabbed that and just preordered the EK 360 Predator AIO as well. My CC is weeping.
If I remember the specifics correctly, it's at 1/7th normal speed, which is a pretty significant hit. I'm not sure how it exactly works out in real world results as far as its bandwidth output goes (because the article I read didn't really go into that much detail) but it's enough of a hit that the card pretty much always (in my experience) stops at 3.5GB. Presumably because using that extra 0.5GB would be more of a hit than not using it. Personally I would sell the 970 and buy a 980 Ti rather than use dual 970s. Stick with the MSI Gaming series, those are the top pick IMO. As always, look up benchmarks of the games you plan on playing first, just in case the Fury X outperforms the 980 Ti in them.
I've never seen "the hit" even in games that use more than 3.5gb vram. This is not aimed at you personally, but can we please drop the 3.5gb bs? It's just boring now.
I have to agree.. I never ran into any issues either, but even if I did its just stupid to say 3.5 when there is in fact literally 4gb on board.
Indeed. I heard from a guy that games load a lot of stuff in the VRAM but dont even use everything. And if something has to be used that isn't in the VRAM it will just swap out some things and it's good to go. Probably just a very small percentage of games out there which create 3,5GB VRAM "problems".
