Please read before posting. New to or returning to green team. Have been running ATI since the 9700 days. Just recently (today) upgraded from a pair of R9 290x’s in crossfire to a pair GTX 980’s in SLI. Here’s my dilemma.

    Bought 2:
    EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Superclocked ACX 2.0's P/N: 04G-P4-2983-KR
    4096 cuda cores (2x2048)
    4gb DDR5
    1266mhz base clock
    1367mhz boost clock

Through EVGA’s Step-Up Program I can trade up to a pair of:

    EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti ACX 2.0+'s P/N: 06G-P4-4991-KR
    5632 cuda cores (2x2816)
    6gb DDR5
    1000mhz base clock
    1076mhz boost clock

So is it worth $200-$225 to trade up from 980 SLI to 980 Ti SLI? Will I see any difference and if so, how much? Will an extra 1600 cuda cores make a difference. So many questions.

I have a 4k monitor, run everything I can in 4k. Have 1250w power supply so the extra power is no biggie.
Heck 2 980 Ti's don't draw as much power as the twin 290x's did.

Just not sure if it’ll be worth the $ to upgrade. I wouldn't even think about it if I had to pay full price but having to only pay the difference between the 2 cards, it’s tempting. Just don’t know enough about the 980’s to make a call.

    Suggestions/viewpoints please

If you're already spending that much money go ahead and do it.

    Some of those as well
I'm in exactly the same situation (well, just one EVGA 980). I'm upgrading to the 980 Ti - the performance increase when overclocked is more than worth the money IMHO.

I'd do it, due to the step up thing and the fact your at 4k.

Those factory boost clocks on the ti's are kind of unimpressive, might want to consider upping them a little though. As said overclocked 980 ti's are serious biz.

    Do it.

Unless you went for watercooling, since the blocks most likely won't fit on the Ti. But if you're under air, just step up, I'd do it too.

    I was in the same situation (980 --> 980 Ti's)

    Minus the 4K Monitor anyway.

For me, it's questionable whether I was silly to do so.

For you, being that you are likely to want to 4K - then yes. :)

Do it without hesitation, for that minor increase in price vs major increase in performance. TBH I think the 980 needs a big time reduction in price otherwise it is kind of irrelevant now imo.

I wouldn't even think about it, you'll need all the grunt you can get for 4k.

The price has already dropped on the 980's in the UK. I'm seeing them for under £400 in most outlets now.

Thanks for the replies. Was trying to see if ya'll could talk me out out it...lol

so Even though the Ti has a much lower clock compared the 980 sc, the additional 800 Cuda cores and the extra 2gb of memory are worth it.

Are the Cuda cores additive? i.e. 2 cards 2048 each = 4096. Or is Cuda like memory, 4gb per card = 4gb?

I know from the articles I just read a pair of Ti's would be pretty close to a pair of Titan X's so I'm not sure what my reservations are. Lack of knowledge on the whole Cuda/maxwell thing I guess. It's all new to me

Definitely upgrade. Don't compare specs directly in that way, you might not get far. Just look at real-world performance in games and benchmarks.

Future safe wise speaking get the Ti, no reason to even ask opinion (in my opinion, lol) is necessary for this move.

It dropped to around $500 usd. It would have to be around $450 for me to even consider it, seeing the performance difference between 980 and 980ti. I would just spend the extra on a 980ti.

Right now it would cost me $97 per card to upgrade. Hell, already have spent this much, what's another $200 bucks...

The sucky part, I just cleaned my system of all AMD/ATI drivers. Now I'll have to do the same with the Geforce drivers, Re-install ATI. Ship the cards off and wait. Heck, I've waited 15 yrs to make the move, whats a few more weeks

I really do appreciate all the replies, Thanks Guys....

I guess to make the transformation complete, the next step will be to finally retire my AMD CPU and move to Intel. Haven't had an Intel processor since the original Celerons...lol

But I think I'll wait till Xmas for that move. New Mobo/CPU/Memory
