GTX 970@1.5Ghz and 2500k vs Q9550 in 70+ benchmarks (+bonus i7-860)

Living in Greece, I am unemployed for quite some time now, so not only I had too much time in my hands but I also wanted to see and to show the world, how the balances change if the cpu is getting old.

Moreover, I will probably not be able to follow my usual upgrade cycles from now on, so I will have to focus on the gpu. I guess the 2500k will run fine with another couple of upgrades.

When a new part comes around, I feel what the general consensus for its OC capabilities is and aim for that.

Thankfully so far I have reached all of those.

The system is now old and I wouldn't like to stress it any more. Of course it only worked in OC mode only for benchmarks and very few selected games, like all of my systems, so that's why it has lasted this long.

 

How long did it took you to do all this?? Jeezus.

 

good going, I didn't know that Lynnfield had such an advantage over c2q clock for clock.

would be good to see how that Lynnfield scores clock for clock with the 2500k, both at 4ghz will be really interesting.

 

Amazing thread. The work you have put into this is phenomenal.

I upgraded from a Q9650 @ 4Ghz last year and was pretty unimpressed with the performance gains. Considering it's a 7 year old CPU things haven't progressed that much.

If you think about it, when the Q9650 was released in August 2008 the fastest GPU you could buy was the Nvidia GTX 280. You compare that to the Titan X and the difference in modern games is night and day.

I think you would notice bigger difference with i7 and higher OC.

When I upgraded form 3.6ghz q9450 to 4.6ghz i7 4770k i literally got 100-150% boost in everything from generic benchmark to cpu bound games/benchmarks by min fps (avg and max was a lot better too).

 

And you'd have noticed less difference with a higher OC (on the 9450 of course). :eyebrows:

Just busting your balls. I'd take a 4770k over my Q9650 ANYDAY.

4Ghz Core i5 2500k are still pending and unfortunately, Witcher 3 has taken most of my time.

i7 860 tests have finished as posted above and I also inculded Killing Floor 2, Witcher 3 and Project Cars final.

I was quite happy to see the Q9550 as it did. Sure it tanked in some benchmarks, but I expected worse.

Don't forget that a cpu can be cpu limited in a single game, but if you add a new graphics card, that cpu limit will produce a different framerate result.

For example, you can run a benchmark with the Q9550+7950 at 1080p, be cpu limited and get 45fps. Then lower the resolution at 720P and still get 45fps, which shows a solid cpu limit scenario.

Then put a better card on that system. You will notice a performance increase anyway.

To illustrate this better, I made a run of GTA V with the same settings on my 7950 and 5850.

Here is the side by side comparison, which is cpu limited for both systems.

The 7950 video (on the left) produces far better results.

 

4,8 is pretty nice on a 2500k. I can barely get mine to 4,5. This is on air though and a less than stellar mobo.

 

4.8 is pretty average for 2500k. Sandy overclocks really high. I'm at same 4.8ghz 1.392v. Can reach 5Ghz at 1.440v all air. Temps are not problems for these chips as well.

 

Probably the video card you are/were using. I was using a GTX 760 which doesn't need that much CPU power.

Your GTX 780 benefits much more from a better CPU.

Also my q9650 build has been pushed to it's absolute limits. I'm running at 4GHZ on a great motherboard (Asus Rampage Formula) with 8GB Corsair Dominator 1066mhz 5-5-5-15 1T RAM which helps get the most out of it.
