Geforce 780 ti black screen

I bought a card (MSI 780 ti) from a friend, and it may have been damaged in shipping. When I install the nvidia drivers, initially the card seems to work at 2D clocks, but as soon as anything kicks the card into 3D clock speeds, it blacks out, and my PC reboots.

I've checked my PSU, it doesn't seem to have any issues with two 280x's in crossfire, so I don't think that's the problem. Any ideas? Is my card dead?

 

Whats the exact psu model? 780ti model?

 

MSI Gaming 3g 780 ti, and a 950W Corsair PSU (not sure exact model)

 

Do you still have the amd cards? put em back into test if you do.

 

Alas, they're currently out of town That would be my first guess. They worked fine a few weeks ago... Is it likely that it's a PSU issue?

 

Dont know for sure tbh, how well do you know your friend? Any chance he would send you a bad card?

 

He swears it "worked", but he might have only checked 2D mode...I suppose he might have sent me a bad card. Is this how cards normally die? Alternatively, is this how cards behave when they're not getting enough power from the PSU?

 

Could be psu, could be card could be both. Have you uninstalled the amd drivers first? You could try the other pci e slot or different pci e plugs from the psu as well.

 

Yep, uninstalled using DDU, tried different slots, PSU plugs etc Tragic, as it's a truly great card!

 

Think he sold you a bad card there. Get your money back.

Yeah nvidia cards are known to have a very high failure rate. Stick with the amd cards as they will last much longer and usually have better driver support.

 

The OS will always warn you about it when you log in. I remember that with my old 4870x2. When I put my first machine together only to realize that I forgot to plug in the second PCIEx cord from PSU.

I think PC's shut down as a safety precaution not to damage itself when something is overheating. Check that thermal paste on your GPU is not rock solid and thermal pads on VRAM etc are not dry/hard.

My EVGA 780Ti SC had them still "factory wet" after a year of intense gaming with temps averaging between 55-64 Celsius on max load @1137 MHz

If your GPU is really dead your PC wont boot up...info source?

What I find odd is he's one of AMD's biggest fan boys and all of a sudden he has SLI Titan blacks from his AMD cards, goind around NV threads and posting how much better AMD drivers are. Just a thought.

Well if pc just restarts when 3d kicks in then it looks like there is not enough power somewhere..

Im also suspecting psu, those 2x 280x had less amps per rail compared to 780ti, especially if its using 4rail +12v system.

Maybe even bad cpu OC, stressing your system more and needs extra cpuv, Vccsa -cpu system agent.

 

Sounds like a dead card.Only thing I'd try is tightening the heat sink on the Gpu, it may have gotten lil knocked up in shipping.

 

So weird, replace the item if u can

 

do u have another PSU lying around that you could use just to run the 780 and leave the one thats in to run the cpu and other things or vice versa.
This is what i did last year to fault find that the PSU in my main tower was failing and not my cards .
