It's all over the news here today. Apparently, my wife's friend's best friend and family were on that plane. Talk about six degree of separation...

    So sad...

This is terrible! Hope they find it, as for MH370 something dodgy happened to it.

Thunderstorm, 1000 x1000 km area - quite horrible.

Inexperienced/overworked pilots fly planes in a lot of the less developed parts of the world. Not to mention the maintenance schedules may not be as rigorous as those in "1st world" countries. And even then, stuff can get through. It's happened before many times. You have to remember that a lot of these planes are running nearly 24/7 most of the time.

With that said, it's extremely unusual for a thunderstorm to bring down a plane. I'm going to go out on a limb and say there was some significant pilot error here. You really have to trust your equipment when you're in a heavy storm/cloud bank like that.

Im on to this news for the past 12 hours now, seems like they havent progressed. Why?
    1. MH370 WAS the last straw. All airlines engines should have been strictly monitored since mh370s disappearance. Inmarsat?
    2. MH370 IS the biggest lesson in the history of aviation.
    3. Tracking and monitoring! You can track an iPhone. Thats $600 machine.
    4. When you lost contact , you should have atleast scrambled jets in the area of last known location, learning from mh370 experience.

    What. The... *

:( I have a fear of flying. Last July was my first flight(im 29), a local flight though. But since this event, I dont think i would fly international anytime soon.

I hope this turns out ok...

Current consensus is insane wind shear taking the plane with it, they requested an altitude change to avoid weather however approval was not given before contact was lost.

The plane had exceeded its endurance when the authorities declared an emergency.

    :(

Not entirely true. Try tracking it after falling from 20,000 feet or underwater.

I'm still wondering why they haven't found the Malaysian plane. The world is indeed a big place.

And iPhones don't suffer the same weather conditions - but they still bend.

I think underwater searches can take a long time, especially if the airplane had time to fly away from its last known position. It's a lot of area to cover.

Just to drop a line, pilots don't fly planes; they are classed as systems managers. All they do is take off and land.

To alter altitude all they do is turn a dial on the AP to make the plane fly higher. I know a private charter pilot and we've discussed 'flying' many times...

The article I read said the approval was denied because another plane was flying at that altitude. Do planes not have radar to detect if they are coming close to another plane? If the pilot feared the passengers were in danger he should have just climbed to a higher altitude if no other planes were in the area. Deal with the consequences later.

The radar on the Airbus A320 was the older type. The latest high tech radar (developed by Qantas) isn't approved for it until next year. It would have better detected the weather system. Supposedly the plane was flying too slow for the altitude and rates of climb.

Australia is studying in the search with a very high tech plane, if there's anything to find it will find it. At least this time they properly know where it is roundabouts'.
