Hello everyone, as the title states, I want to stick with AMD and build an AMD setup. My budget is $300, and I only need a motherboard, processor and memory. I have all the other parts to complete my setup including a GTX 760. I live in the US just for a little more information as where I reside. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FX-8320-9...712727&sr=8-3&keywords=amd+motherboard+bundle only $29 over your budget and includes CPU, MOBO, and RAM.
Hasn't he already got a motherboard the equivalent of that one? What about something like: http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FX-8370-E...e=UTF8&qid=1414715030&sr=8-1&keywords=fx-8370 or http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FX-8370E-...=UTF8&qid=1414715093&sr=8-1&keywords=fx-8370e Then add say, 2x4 GB of say DDR3-2133? It will still be under $300, and you'd have a great upgrade.
I heard horror stories about adding an 8 core processor to this motherboard I have right now. My 955 BE went out recently, hence the need to upgrade. I do realize that the 955 BE was a 125W processor and I was able to OC it to 3.5ghz, but I am still skeptical to buy anything above a 4 core processor. I have had this mobo since 2013 and haven't had any problems with it at all, even though I have seen negative reviews about it. Any input on this?
No he doesn't, he has the terrible MSI version which can't handle more than a 4 core CPU due to limited VRM's which is why I recommended that bundle. It has everything he asked for, add in free delivery as well from Amazon and also it comes with an AMD FX8320 which is faster than the CPU you recommended. Yep this is why I recommended this bundle http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FX-8320-9...712727&sr=8-3&keywords=amd+motherboard+bundle It comes with this board http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4591#ov You will be perfectly fine with this board and an 8320 CPU, might even get a little overclock out of it as well.
How is the FX-8320 faster than the FX-8370? If the board didn't support it, then you should complain as it's on the CPU support list for it.
How about this mobo with that processor? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130790
The only thing going for the FX 8370 if he were to get the E version which is 95W compared to 125W but I don't know if it is worth going for a less wattage CPU or not compared to the 8320.
8370E is generally 30-50 bucks more. Barely worth it. Also the 8370e has pitiful clockspeed to keep true to its 95W.
FX 8350 looks like a nobrainer. 8320 being slow and garbage and 8370 being a tad bit expensive for 100MHz (2%) clock bump. Then again it seems that 8320 overclocks as high as 8350 http://hwbot.org/hardware/processor/fx_8320/ http://hwbot.org/hardware/processor/fx_8350/
That "slow and garbage" 8320 is identical your "no brainer" 8350, they aren't even binned, just have different base/turbo multi's. Turbo core is crapola anyway... @OP if you don't want to go higher than a quad u may as well keep the 955. But if you do upgrade, please invest in a quality board and avoid MSI AM3+ (especially the G43/46)
Hey I just saw this post. Ermm are u sure the CPU is dead because CPU's almost never die, but motherboards do. Like the G46 in your profile for example....unless you're dead certain I would say it's the board. I have a 955 that's been humming along at 4.2Ghz for 4 yrs, never missed a beat. It's installed on an ASUS M5A97-Evo. Anyway, for $292 you could have this https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=19728394 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=35-103-099 and keep the ram u have. Or not.
Hey Pill Monster, Yeah I do think the cpu went out. I started having freezing issues and massive stuttering. I took my OC off the 955BE and the problems persisted. I did a clean install, but still no go. I popped in an old AM3 Athlon XII and it works just fine with this motherboard. I can't play a few of my games like Batman Arkham Origins, Cod Ghosts because this CPU can't handle them. The 1st link you posted didn't show me anything, and I do have that cpu cooler that you listed, so I am good with that. I asked if the MSI 970 Gaming mobo, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130790 would be good, but no one responded. As far as the cpu, I will probably take the 8320.
MSI budget boards are usually a hit or a miss.. try for this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...851&cm_re=asus_amd_990-_-13-131-851-_-Product 120 after MIR

MSI G4x boards are seriously junk.
You could check Micro Center,I believe they just opened a new store in Houston http://www.microcenter.com/site/products/amd_bundles.aspx
Grab the Pentium G3258; this little Processor over clocks like a BEAST on stock cooler and remains at manageable temps doing so. Add in a GTX 750ti and you're in business. You'll save 60 bucks over the fx 8320 which probably performs worse in video games.
A dual core in this day and age just doesn't cut it. I don't care how good the per core performance is. Two cores.... just no.
