If they release a 8GB version, I might just pick up a pair. Or I'll just wait for the true high end cards this time.

By the way, does the hardware fully support DirectX 12?

By the time the "true" high end Maxwell will arrive the next gen cards, aka Pascal, will be released...the waiting game is just silly.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I always understood that the memory bus and the memory clock are combined to calculate the total bandwith. If they achieve a high memory clock on the GTX880, the total bandwith can be equal or higher than a 384-bit bus with a lower memory clock.

Again the midrange chip sold as 880, and GM210 as 980 prolly. It's dirty

Would I be creating any sorts of bottlenecks with my current spec if I added that GPU and a 2k monitor (up from 1080)?

    My 680`s had a bandwidth of 230 gb/s at 7200, my 780 ti`s have a bandwidth of 360 gb/s at 7516. I do not think a 256 bit card can reach my 780 ti bandwidth with a 384 bit bus.

Coupled with at least 4GB, it should be enough...

bandwith and storage capacity are 2 different things... Now i dont expect to see a jump to use max quality on 4K resolution with that..

Agreed but that's a different thing. I personally do not think that 4GB is too little (if the rumors are true). People who think otherwise can wait for the 8GB version but that's overkill for such cards imho.

It depends. Maybe they've found a way to achieve an insane memory clock :)

So basically a re branded 780ti with more memory a little lower price?

Nah looking at about 15-20% faster by leaked specs.

Found an interesting post on the evga forums by "lehpron":

Well it will still be lower then 280gb/s and I see what's up with 288gb/s now once I enable 4xmsaa or 4x TXAA.

Its too slow for it (ie BF4 or Crysis3 @ max settings), I have no doubt this 880 or what ever its called, will be crippled to max with ram bandwidth once you start using MSAA, nvm @ higher reso. :nerd:

For example 750Ti is almost as fast as stock 580GTX, but once you start using MSAA it will cripple behind with its 1x slower vram bandwidth.

I bet them cards are 7-8ghz, probably 7. They should be faster than my cards, but idk once you start adding high aa and high resolutions. time will tell.

Funny how many news posts this new GPU gets, even though it's still a lot of rumors regarding sepcs. :D

If they are right though, and it's 4GB vram (I wouldn't mind more) I will wait for the MSI Lightning editions or something like that and grab one or two. I don't care much about 256 bit, since my 680s are also 256bit and ran all my games great (and still do for 80% of the time) at 1440p until they started to get vram choked.

That is my understanding too but I always though that a higher memory bus speed is better than higher clocked memory. Also, higher memory speeds mean more heat. Is that not correct?

Common sense tells me that Nvidia wouldn't be that stupid to release a GTX880 that loses to the GTX780 at high reso + MSAA. That would be a very bad move.

Looking back at when the GTX680 launched, I remember it matching/beating the HD7970 at surround resolution. Despite it having "only" a 256-bit bus.

But like Solfaur said, we'll have to wait until we see the final specs and benches. We can only guess now.

I've come across about 5 or 6 games that max out my GTX 780's 3 GB of VRAM and that's at 1920x1200. There are a few games where I cannot use 8xMSAA because I lack the VRAM (Max Payne 3 and Hitman Absolution). Just because a game uses all the VRAM, does not mean it will stutter or anything but if I was to move up to 2560x1440 or 2560x1600 then it might. I suspect 4 GB of VRAM may be enough for 1920x1080 (1080p) gaming as the new consoles have around 5.5 GB of their 8 GB for games usage and most of that is likely to be used for textures and so on.

I do not think that 4 GB of VRAM would be sufficient for 2560x1440+ gaming going forward, not if you want to play on maximum quality. I think it will be OK for me though as I will be sticking with 1920x1200 for the forseeable future as it is the sweet spot for me, allowing me to max out pretty all of my games on a single GPU card. I'm not a fan of SLI or CFX, though I tried both, due to their issues (negative scaling/incompatibilities) and general lack of support by both NVIDIA and developers except for a handful of major releases.

They bumped the L2 cache from 256kb to 2MB. That should help free up bandwidth transfers to the GDDR5 in memory intensive situations.
