Fast-Write is useful , here's on what!

Discussion in 'Videocards - AMD Radeon' started by DirectXorcist, Aug 24, 2003.

  1. hi , on my R9700 Pro AIW i always had FAST-WRITE enabled and never ever had any problem "WINXP PRO SP1 here" ....

if you ever wonder for what is needed FAST-WRITE , here's the answer , it give you about 5 FPS in overall and about 30 FPS more in BUMP MAPPING or Enviromental BumpMapping used by many games "Colin McRae III" for example.

i know u may not believe me , but try running 3DMARK 2001 SE
and with and without FAST-WRITE and watch out the BUMP MAPPING demo and EBMapping demo scores , big speed increase people , COLIN too is a big test.

in the end , Fast-Write is really important.

if it's unstable in your PC then ok turned it off , but , if it works for you don't listen to anyone saying TURN IT OFF.....cause u'll loose a big chunk of speed.

    Thanks for reading :)

I have always had them on, never had any issues with them so I didn't know if they made that much of a difference...

on my friend's 9000Pro, FW gives colourful artifacting in the 3DMark2001SE's PointSprites test, and also in 03's GT1(Wings of Fury), but the score is increased indeed.
I myself, turn on FW all the time and no problems whatsoever, also no score change whether I turn it off or on.

it reacts differently in different systems, I believe...

I ran SiSoft Sandra, and it said that my mobo supports Fast Write, shall I take the risk and enable it???

-=CBK=-Myk3: You should definately try it. I have never heard about anyone damaging anything by turning it on. If causes problems (stability or rendering errors) you can always turn it off again.

It appears (from the few people that have replied in this thread) that mostly ATI cards are affected.

mengy: I once had a KT133 mobo (ABIT KT7-RAID) and it worked flawlessly with both a GF1 and GF3Ti200 with FW turned on.
Perhaps you could try a frriends nVidia card and see if that works in your mobo with FW on.

Oh yes, by the way, how do I enable fast writes, I haven't flashed my BIOS, so my BIOS doesn't have a setting on FW, and when I tried to turn it on using SmartGart it wasn't having any of it, why is this do you think???

My mobo is an ECS (Elitegroup) K7S5A, and I don't want to flash the bios because my current settings are nice. Plus, I don't like using floppy disks lol. :D

    What version?

According to ECS' website there are 3 versions:
    • K7S5A V3.1 (SiS® 735 Chipset)
    • K7S5A Pro V5.0 (SiS® 735 Chipset)
    • K7S5A+ V1.0 (SiS® 745 Chipset integrated 1394A with DDR333)

    EDIT: And what BIOS version?

I think fast write increases the AGP bus bandwith by writing data to your graphics card quicker, and it applies to the rule that the faster it goes, the less stable it gets. :) (I think :p)

Hmm, I just have a K7S5A 1.0, I think the v3.1 is the flashed version.

I'm not sure what BIOS version I have, I have checked before but i've forgotten, do you want me to check it again???

K7S5A with SiS 735 Chipset, I have the latest SiS AGP Chipset drivers for my mobo too, yes so how can I enable fast writes, SmartGart won't let me

If your BIOS doesn't contain an option to turn it on and you don't want to flash it, you could try one of the following programs:
    • aTuner
    • nvHardpage
    • RivaTuner
All these programs are available at www.guru3d.com.

You could also try some registry hack, but if you don't want to flash your BIOS, you probably don't want to mess with that either ;)
