Well shes turned up, no dead pixels, so pristine :D, helluva difference, just moving the mouse and windows about on the desktop, smooth as hell, well fast, and i banged Fear on to give a quick test of the 144hz, as i know that'll go higher than 60 locked, and instead of being locked at the 60fps, its locked at 144fps, its amazing, its smooth as hell, well fast, absolute cracker! :D

Just tried Grid 2, amazing, ive been missing out, as where ive been locked to 60fps on my old 60hz screen, im now hitting up to 80 odd fps. :D

Incredible, just tried Metro LL without v-sync, couldn't see any tearing, and i was going up to around 136fps!

144hz is where is at. Could never go back, ive tried 60hz screens since getting 144hz monitor and its like a slide show.

Yeah, i know why everyone says you wont go back now, only had it about 5hrs, and i could already never see myself going back, its a massive difference, everythings so much smoother, and games which can do more than 60fps, are doing that now, and still without tearing, as they locked up to 144 v-sync'd instead of 60, bloody love it! :D

Is it normal for the memory clock to lock at full speed (1250mhz), when using 144hz ?, as had the CCC open, and noticed when i switch back to 60hz, it goes back to 150mhz, switch it back to 144hz, and it goes back to 1250mhz. :p

EDIT: Good old Google, seems its correct for 144hz.

Haha grats man, I had the same feeling. I went from two 23" 60Hz monitor to one 27" 120Hz monitor and it was a good feeling, especially playing shooters. Desktop and browsing gets all smooth as well. Dont forget to set that in Screen Resolution -> Advanced if you havent already done so.

In majority of the game engines, not all of them (especially ports) run over 60fps (hell some are capped to 30), so those games you wont really get that much of a benefit. And not all games you'll be able to push 120+fps but even if you're able to push like 80-90 or so, it will still feel smooth in that aspect. But it will also depend on how the game engine is tweaked up.

I've been screaming this for so long now... it drives me crazy when I see people post that the human eye can't tell the difference above 60 hz. It's night and day for me when I play at 60 or above 60. People ask me to explain in words the difference but it's one of those things you just have to experience. It's why I fell in love with my Catleap 2B the first night I had it.

I forgot that at first, switching to 144hz manually in the display props :p

I was playing Grid 2 earlier, was hitting over 100fps at some points, so i was thinking to myself, ive been playing this locked at 60fps, my 290s probably been sitting there going, jesus, 60fps, is that all you want, im not even sweating here lad, i can give you double that! :D

Yeah i was a bit sceptical at first, but the difference really is massive, everythings just butter smooth. :D

I thought 60hz was fine, but now seeing this, i think i need to go to specsavers, as 60hz is a slideshow compared to this :p

For a person as you describe it, I would also strongly recommend a 1440p display. I know they are just 60Hz, but that won't matter if you are just editing, doing 3D models etc. Of course IPS panels are a must with those screens. They don't come cheap but they are worth it and a greater improvement than 120/144 Hz.
Also, personally, I prefer a 60Hz 1440p monitor over a 144Hz 1080p any day. Yes, especially multiplayer shooters a 144Hz monitor would be easier on the eyes/aesthetics, but in single player, games feel a lot richer in 1440p than 1080p. That is, of course, if you can run the games at a reasonable frame rate.

    On Topic

So in conclusion, since OP asked specifically for a gaming monitor:
Yes if you are playing fast paced games, especially online, not necessarily limited to shooters. No, if you mostly play Single Player. Go for 1440p instead :)

1440p are capable of higher than 60hz, you just need to buy the right 1. I`m at 100hz currently.

    ^ Nice.

Had my old screens Trace Free set to 40, so just stuck with that again, but on reading reviews of this one again, i notice they recommend it set to 60, so will do some testing.

Well, I just plugged in my new PB278Q and honestly I don't see a difference. The last monitor I was using was 120Hz, and I can't see why anybody would care. Maybe it's the new resolution making up for it, but the picture in BF4 is fantastic. I can't see any tearing, bluring, anything... Just silky smooth 27" gameplay.

Yeah it could be the res, ive seen a massive difference going from 60hz to 144hz.

TraceFree seems fine at 60, so will just leave on that. :)

I never noticed much difference from 60hz to 120hz on a very fast TN monitor (Samsung s27a950d). Everything ran smoothly on it. But when I moved to IPS and PLS monitors, 60hz sucked ballz. Even movies looked bad as motion stutter was very evident. Fortunately, I am able to OC one of the monitors (Qnix) to 96-120hz. Even 96hz was a marked difference, so left it at that.

So basically depends on the monitor. With very fast TNs, 60 to 120hz not as noticeable. Slow IPS/PLS monitors, yes noticeable. 120hz to 144hz, I doubt you will see anything.

I dropped down to 120 to see if there was any noticeable difference, but there wasn't, its night and day though going from 60 to 144.

Wish id made the move sooner, as seems like ive been holding my card back, like in Grid 2 for example, where ive had to have v-sync on to lock it at 60fps (well, like all games tbh), or id get the screen ripping to shreds, so unable to play it, im now locked at 144, and hitting 100+ fps :D

Ive also noticed, i can now have v-sync off in some games and get no tearing (well not that i can notice anyway), like in Metro LL, on my old 60hz with v-sync off, the tearing was terrible, so that was always locked at 60 to, but on my 144hz, i can now have v-sync off, as i now don't see any visable tearing, and enjoy 100+ fps, as with v-sync still on, im still only getting 60, due to the game engine locked at that.

I had the same questions a few months ago, as im not a serious FPS gamer I bought a Iiyama XB2779QS-S 27" AH-IPS Pro.

My OCed 780GTX drives the 2560x1440 res very well in FPS with stunning IQ. For flight sims and RTS like COH2 im glad I went this route.

Dropped it back to 60Hz, to see what it was like now after getting used to 144Hz, and jesus, its bad, didn't even last 5 minutes, moving windows about, was like they were splitting in half, and the mouse pointer, seemed to be flicking on and off when quickly moving it about! :D

Yeah it's normal for memory speed to ramp up

the extra Hz require card to bump up to 3d clocks

mine do the same with the Qnix 1440p @ 120Hz
