Hello all. I'm right now sitting on WD Blue 1TB. I upgraded all my setup for games and rendering. Right now I need something fast. What must I choose? SSD for OS and only BF4. Or fast HDD (wd black 1tb) for games and recording purposes? Thanks for any suggestions.
I'm not sure what your aim is exactly. I'd probably do a mix of both.... SSD for OS and any games you frequently play, and a HDD for other storage purposes. whatever you're doing on a HDD, performance differences would be negligible at best. Can even search Google for "Western Digital Blue vs. Black", and see a number of results of forums with people saying that the main difference is in benchmarks, and even Blues can occasionally outperform a black.
Thanks for your answer. I'm aiming to play BF4 and record it. I'm thinking about getting SSD for OS and BF4, like you said. And using my WD Blue HDD for my footage and other files such as bluray films. Is 120gb SSD enough for OS and BF4?
If you can afford it, and have alot of games go bigger than 120. I have a Kingston 3K 120 and with Batman, Assassin's Creed 4, Tom Clancy Blacklist, MLB 2K12 and my Nascar I ran out of room! The rest is just programs and OS. But youll dig the SSD for games.
Yea. I recently upgraded from a 120GB OCZ Agility 3 to a 250GB Samsung 840 Evo, and that extra space REALLY makes a difference. If you can manage it, i'd look for something in the 240-250GB range. You might be able to get away with a 120GB drive, but eventually you might wish you'd just spent a bit more for a larger drive... as i did.
Unfortunately I can't handle SSD with >120gb. Btw I need it only for BF4 and OS. Will buy Kingston V300 120gb SSD (SV300S37A/120G) on next week. I think it's worth it. Thanks for all your replies and help
Aside from the SSD question, the WD 1tb blue is a single platter model and faster than the black 1tb which has 2 platters. WD have not yet come out with single platter 1tb blacks yet. Blacks have better warranty but blues have better performance at this point in time.
Some might think my setup is overkill, but I run: 120 GB SSD#1: OS, Drivers and Apps (MS Office, Adobe CS, C4D etc etc) 120 GB SSD#2: Games 3TB HDD: Storage (videos, music, backups, pictures, documents) If I didn't have so many large scale apps (Adobe is 11GB alone), I would probably run the games from the same drive as the OS. Sum; this works well for me and using Crucial for reliability, not for being the fastest was a conscious choice. Seeing how you can pick up a 120GB SSD for $90 / £65, this should appeal.
SSD for OS and programs + whatever games you can fit on it, depends on what size you get decent HDD for games/storage/backup (2TB+)
Going from a 128 to 256 SSD you'll be surprised how quickly the 128 will fill up! I always ran around 3-5gb free space, was such a hindrance I just decided to pony up the extra for a 256gb SSD. Well worth the money, I now have enough free space that I can install much more games and still be fine. Either way though, SSD all the way, if only for a main game or two, OS and main applications.
I bought 120gb SSD. Free space right now is 28gb. Only OS/BF4 and some applications on SSD. Very happy Looks like I'm flying after HDD.
