Try Testing the last Preview Build. The driver comes with
multiple installers. Alternate Installer and AMDSetup.

Try installing the driver Through Both Setup.
Make Sure to use the Latest Preview 2 Build
uploaded on the front page of this forum.

I have a 27" iMac with Windows 8.1 loaded. The onboard graphics is a ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB. The generic microsoft display driver works, but, if I let windows update the driver or install an AMD driver, my computer makes the device disconnected chime and the screen goes black.

With the latest version of the drivers offered here, the problem persists, but it also make the device connected chime and disconnected chime cyclicly. The screen remains black until I boot into safe mode and return the driver to the generic microsoft one.

I have a theory that the primary problem is the built in iMac display talking to the video card correctly, others on this forum have mentioned being able to connect with one kind cable or adaptor but not another- but being a built in iMac display I don't have the option to try and reconnect it via hdmi or anything.

Any advice on how to get this working would be greatly appreciated.

@dellon132 I'm going to try to reinstall you last build, the PRE 2 with your last DX9 Switcher pack, let me test, and I'll feedback if I sucedeed or failed.

Edit 1: Mamamia pizzeria ! It worked ! No BsOD, i'll test if I can switch to the "performance" gfx, Notice that I tried to update the driver because faststartup on Windows 8.1 didn't worked anymore with the build that i was using previoulsy.

Edit 2 : When switching my gfx, I get a BsOD IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL, but when i rebooted the computer, the gfx was normal, the driver applied for both of my cards, please optimise switching graphic part dellon, and it will be amazing !

Most Black Screen Bugs can be resolved when Users do a Full Cleanup of all installed Drivers. This can be done by downloading the latest Uploaded Dx9 Switcher from the First page in this thread. Next extract it and perform a Full Driver Cleanup.

Note: Starting With the Newly Uploaded Preview 2 Cleaner
The resolved a bug in which using the Driver Cleaner Would result
    in a Black Screen.

Well I already made changes to the driver for Mobility HD 5000
and HD 6000 Users so I may release an experimental Build.

My god dellon i think it worked this time i think almost . Well here are the things i did
    1) ran cleaner 1 chose option remove amd software
2)ran cleaner 2 chose option fresh install
ran the setup , clicked next on everything , which was probably a mistake since i dont need the signature method so it installed . with one failure for driver signature one .
    THE DISPLAY driver actually worked
    i am on 13.114.6.0 now .
The only sad part is the catalyst control center wont open , it crashes if try to open it but i can change the settings if right click the icon in startup space but if i click on open it crashes.
any idea what to do , i can do without the catalyst anyways the display driver is important and it works.
if you can provide a solution how to get the control center to work , i can start testing things.

EDIT: nvm restarted again and the control center works , WE HAVE DONE IT after about 40 tries from last year it works haha thanks dellon
    http://imgur.com/yPgjEzQ

now of course i will be testing the following and update results , since its important for me
    1) video playback sub hd , hd Result: works great no stuttering or errors
2)online watch : twitch , youtube (browser chrome) Result: works fine no issues
3)gaming : dx9.0c games and opengl 2.1 or less games from steam Result:Ran about 4 games , 2 old ones and euro truck simulator 2 for open gl test , all seems to work fine
    we have a Winner here
is there anything else i should try? everything seems to work great

    Ok, then let me clarify
I have followed every scrap of instructions I can find and it always ends in a black screen. When the instructions are ambiguous I've iterated through each interpretation I could think of.

    To wit-

    1)
    I boot into safe mode
I use the simple cleanUP utility
I run option 1 to remove software
then I run option 2 to remove drivers
I select to remove upgradeable drivers, because if I select to remove fresh installation it prompts me to reboot and acts like I still have drivers installed

after the cleanUP utility says everything is gone, and if I can check device manager and it doesn’t have the updated microsoft ati driver, I reboot into normal windows

    2)
    occasionally it boots up normally
often it boots up to a black screen

if it boots to a black screen, I go back to part 1)

sometimes it will boot up normally, then windows will decide to update the display driver on its own to the microsoft ati wddi driver and will give me the device disconnected chime and go to a black screen while I’m still trying to fix this problem (windows update is turned off and told not to update drivers, this still happens anyways). If this happens, I go back to part 1)

    3)
if it does not go to a black screen, I try some variation of installing the amd drivers

if I use the regular installer, I don’t receive any error messages, just the computer will make the device connected chime, then make the device disconnected chime and the screen will go black. I’ll manually power down the machine and return to part 1)

If I use the Alternate Installer included with the download (which I run as administrator), it gets as far as installing the first .inf file, makes the device disconnected chime, and the screen goes black. I return to part 1)

If I use the regular installer through setup, it gets as far as the popup asking me if I’m sure I want to install, I select yes, then it makes the device disconnected chime and the screen goes black. Shortly after it makes the device connected chime, but the screen stays black. I return to part 1)

If I install using the Upgradable driver option on previous versions of the utilities, screen goes to black, device disconnected chime, then device connected chime, cyclically. (the latest unified version of the cleanUP utility just keeps uninstalling over and over again). I return to part 1)

I've tried iterations in normal vs safe mode, I've tried iterations with different versions of the software. I've tried manually installing the associated .inf files. I've tried installing and uninstalling through device manager. I've tried updating through windows. I have spent hours and have not found any combination that results in something other than a black screen. the Microsoft Basic Display Driver is the only constant that currently works.

I tried this driver with my ancient desktop when I just upgraded it to windows 8 (not 8.1, my cpu doesn't support 8.1). It got through about halfway with the installation and then there was a bunch of static garbage on the screen. I could heard the hdd spinning so I know it was still installing. After things quieted down I manually powered off the computer since I couldn't see what I was doing. When I turned it back on things seemed to work fine and I could access all the resolutions but my second monitor seems to have some display lag, almost like it is not being accelerated by hardware.

I restarted the computer again and got nothing but static garbage on the screen. I think I might have to try FLEM with some other drivers but I haven't quite figured out how to to use it.

Anyone with an ancient radeon 9800xt been able to get these to work?

    Here are my specs:

    Athlon 64 3000+
win 8 x64 (this was a fresh format)
    3 gig ram
    9800XT

While that's Great to hear, there is only one thing that requires Testing
for Previous Legacy users since you already did the basic Test.
Launch the AMD Settings Optimizer then Select Option 2.
This Switcher allows Previous Legacy Users to Switch btw color Settings
and Display Settings when using Catalyst Control Center.

    Before Installing the Display Driver
Try applying the xGGpuM Recovery Time
by running the tool as an administrator.
This tool can be Found in the Dx9 Switcher
    Folder.

When you say your screen becomes garbled. Are you by chance referring to
    to the Black Screen Bug?
Try running both included cleaners. Use N for the Package Cleaner
and F for the Driver Cleaner. Next attempt to install the Driver Though
AMD Setup custom install. When the list of Packages appear Select all
and UN-check the Signature Workaround. After doing so attempt to install
    all selected Packages again.

    Other Thoughts
Which driver did you try to install Previously?
are you installing the Latest (PRE 2) Driver
    uploaded on the front page?

Thanks for the tips! I was using your official release so I just tried PRE2 and I got the same garbled screen as seen here
H tee tee pee ess colon slash slash 3x double-u dot dropbox dot com /s/1084ighle25up56/VID_20140108_153433.mp4
Sorry, forumwon't let me post links
however when I powered down the computer everything was perfect when it started back up. I could feel that both monitors were benefitting from hardware acceleration instead of just the primary monitor like before. I could tell by dragging a window around the screen to see how smooth it is.

The only problem is if I attempt to boot into unsigned driver mode in win8, then I get the garbled screen every single time. Also sometimes when just booting up normally if I am unlucky then the garbled screen with show up. Lastly, if I right click on a flash video with flash x64 and a x64 browser such as cyberfox or waterfox then flash crashes instantly. That one is not a big deal though because I never right click them anyway.

I will try to clean and install with the alernate installer method and see what happens.

Thanks for your awesome work on these, I hope you get hired by AMD!

Update to post above - tried using alternate installer, worked fine until I restarted the computer which gave me garbled screen, restarted a second time and it works fine. As long as I keep the computer running and I don't try to go into unsigned driver mode then I'm good :)

Thanks for sharing your results. Seems like Previous Legacy Mobility Support is working as intended.

I'll try updating Previous Legacy Desktop Support as an attempt
to resolve the garbled screen and Flash Player bug. Thanks for posting.

This bug seems to be a Global Problem. (Nvidia and AMD)
Have you tried forcing Anti Aliasing or applying 3RD Party
    Method of Anti Aliasing.

    AMD Catalyst
    MSLAA
    Default AA
    Anisotropic Filtering

    3RD Party
    SMAA
    FXAA
