Yep, having multiple api's would be bad, especially if it meant certain games were brand specific.

The problem is that I don't see Nvidia using it if AMD have an appreciable advantage, it just isn't their style.

Well, maybe Mantle will expose Nvidia weak ass compute power.

How so? I thought games do not use double precision, ever.

    that's right :)

hence why NV cripples it for non telsa cards

It's not about double precision alone but pure number crunching power.
AMD cards have always been stronger in this department.

    "Always" isn't particularly accurate.

AMD's current consumer cards (HD7K and R7/R9) are better at double precision than NVidia's (600/700, excluding GK110 based cards), but since graphics rendering doesn't rely on double precision, it's not really a weak point. GK110 was built for double precision performance, so it's a special case. In GPGPU related tasks, GK110 is a beast. In any case, Mantle won't prove anything in the way of GPGPU capability as it's a graphics API. It shouldn't be any more affected by compute performance than OpenGL or DirectX.

GK110 was designed for double precision compute performance....GK104, GK106, GK108 were not. They were designed specifically for graphics rendering... Quite honestly, and this is just MY opinion, if you're concerned about compute performance you should be looking at a GK110 based card if you're buying NVidia.....unless of course you're on a strict budget.

Well im considering a R9 290X card but im waiting on the results of this mantel API, If it gives even a 5% boost on a card that's already 100 pound cheaper to an equivalent 780 I will be buying.
Ive already figured out what I plan to do if I do buy one to keep the noise and temps down.
I don't have a water cooling loop so I have to stick with what I can do.
Google these and you will see the direction im pointing towards.

    TripTCC Corsair H60/H80/H100 GPU Bracket

H100 cpu cooler with duel sealed rad

Alpenföhn Passive DRAM / VRAM Chip Coolers

    4 scrythe 120mm fans 1000 rpm

It fits and will drop the temps by 70% and the benefit doing it this way is you can use it on another card if you ever upgrade unlike the full water loop setup cooler plates.

ok, but here we're talking about Mantle, not GPU coolers... or suggestions on what you can buy, not the right thread. Please, if possible, try to bring something useful to the discussion about Mantle only... because we need it, in case... :)

Will BF4 be fixed when this finally gets patched in for it in December though, that is the question, otherwise its going to be a massive fail, not working :D

It's an ATi/AMD API so it could take forever over whenever they announced...then again, it's GCN specific, not Hawaii specific.

Funniest thing is the NVIDIA allows access to extensions that add features and raise performance - this happened in Far Cry 2, for example. I don't think this will be very significant, but it is interesting.

Mantle could, should, would, perhaps, maybe etc. get you more performance.
I am from 'show me state" and I'd like to see a single proof. Until that happen...

I called it saying it would be delayed when they said it'll be out end of December. We haven't heard anything new and I'm convinced it won't be out until mid-late Jan. We'll see
