    How much will a Q9450 bottleneck a 7870?

    I own a 7870 and it's runing on a Q8300 OC'ed to 3.4GHz.

In most of the games the GPU usage is 100% or very close to that. However. in Battlefield 4 (cpu heavy game) my GPU average usage is 30% (in multiplayer of course).

How much more GPU usage will I get if I upgrade to a Q9450?

Sorry to say this, not much.. Idk, out of my head I'd say 10-15% more in best scenario.

I use to own that cpu too, was great and all @ 3.6ghz but BF3/Crysis2/Hitman AA/TombRaider/Natural Selection2/FarCry3 just didnt cut it.. My gpu 570GTX was to fast for it..

Now with my new cpu its like i got a new GPU, for example I just played latest NFS HP2012 - most people had slowdown issues including me, now it runs 60fps vsynced all the time.

No problem, I just want opinions :)

Upgrading my CPU means upgrading my MB and RAM, it's a big move for my wallet :/
That's why I would like to know if there is a significant gain in GPU usage with the Q9450.

    Yea i know..

Well it will help for sure, especially if you can OC to at least 3.6GHz, just dont expect any huge miracles ^^

Idk if you now had min 30-35fps, with OC'ed Q9450 you could have 40-45fps.

    Edit:; @beta below

show us Bf3 Bf4 scenario with low msaa, not a game that's heavy gpu bottlenecked and has poor multicore support :nerd:

well, i have an q9550 @ 3.8 Ghz. and all i can say, that my gtx670 ISNT Bottlenecked..well at least not much. very little..if u can OC your cpu "DO IT" the faster it is, the better it will work with the GPU...
At least thats what i see here at my PC..

i was in the same boat as you..ether upgrade the whole PC, mobo, cpu, ram..or just Upgrade teh GFX Card..

now i went form an gtx460 to the gtx670, and im very happy with it..

it did make a huge difference..

my cpu/gpu usages in Batman Arkham Origins for example:
    looks good indeed...

    Thanks for the info :)

Any more users out there with experiences with this CPU or similar?

My old Q6600 3.2Ghz kinda holding back a GTX560ti i was using back then, quite alot actually.

CPU usage was high and GPU low, it couldn't keep up with newer games, especially MMO's.

can you get a q9650? that 9 multi will get you to 4ghz no problem. and should not bottleneck that bad.

a q9550 or q9650 is the best choice for an socket 775 mobo..3.8 to 4 ghz are usually good to go..

like stated by ---TK---, hes right...

I didnt mention the 9550 because iirc you need high speed ddr2 to get 4ghz. but a 9550 is good for a 3.8ghz core clock with 1066 rams

Just overclock your CPU and you will be fine! I some game titles will have some bottleneck and some none at all. Do not upgrade to Q9450 - not much of un upgrade from your current cpu.

Nice to meet someone in the same boat :)
Do you own Battlefield 3 or 4? Can you test on them (multiplayer)? They are really heavy CPU games and I would love to see how your CPU performs and the GPU usage.

    shure..

    BF4 multiplayer. 48 player server.
Of course, this will perform not so great. but im ok with it. expecially the money i saved..

settings is a mix of ultra and high with 2xmsaa @ 1600x900.

as u see the cpu is really working there. of course this is 32bit bf4. normally i play 64bit. there the usage of teh cpu goes up to 98% for all cores..

But 75% GPU usage isnt as bad as i lookes like.
in 64bit, i stay at my 60 - 66 fps 80% of the game. so thats fine with me i locked the FPS to 66 via cfg..

in bf3 on teh other hand, everything is fluid as it can get, with all wisthles and bells on ultra and 4xmsaa..steady fps up to 100 and dips to 65 fps, with a gpu usage of around 98%, mostly troughout teh whole game..CPU isnt struggeling as much as in bf4, but that was no wonder at all..

If u wanna play bf4 with all bling bling a socket 775 CPU wont cut it..But i think u know that..

well. if u dont need Über resolutions, and allways ultra settings in "very few" Games, than i would whait with the mobo, cpu, ram upgrade...

im happy with my performance gain, for only 180 euro..(that is the gtx670 PE)..

Thank you so much for test!

I agree, the Q9550 can do the job. I might get one.
Your GPU might be at 75% but that is better than using half of it.

There aren't many CPU heavy games out there like BF4. I'm not going to upgrade my MB and RAM just for it.

If it's just for BF4, then you can wait for Mantle update and see if you still need higher clocked CPU.

With r9 290x and a 2.0GHz AMD CPU, mantle did not make any bottlenecks they say.

Since I can't compete, bandwidth wise, I kill it with latency and a healthy dose of fsb.
    You can too.
If you can get the chip for cheap then I think you'd still have a rig worth running for a while but seeing as you're already on a 45nm? c2q, the difference might not be justifiable. Besides, there's no telling if it will be a clock monster or anything.

    Rock what you got!
