It's almost like AMD is thumbing their nose at Intel for the Netburst era where Intel tried the same gigahertz race. I doubt that's the case, but still, the whole thing comes off as petty regardless.
Well, for what i seen: They dont wanted to release this one really as a part of any series, they know due to TDP, they will surely not interest a lot of peoples outside overclockers and some AMD enthusiast. they know they will not sell a lot of this one, so they price it as it is... Could even been some OEM who have ask for it... who know. I dont think this cpu is here for anything outside because they can release it... The availability will be limited. Not sure there's so much to speak or discuss about it..
It's a limited edition processor. I doubt yields are good enough for AMD to push these processors out long term. Best way to limit sales (and expected availability) is to price high. With it's price and TDP, it's not a processor I'd buy but neither will stop the most hardcore AMD enthusiasts from grabbing them up.
No true AMD enthusiast would buy one because they wouldn't be that dumb. Only a person who didn't know much about AMD chips and who got sucked in by marketing hype would be ignorant enough to pay that stupid amount of cash. The users who buy a 9xxx are from the same school as those who bought the Phenom II 980 instead of a much cheaper and identical 955.....
I've had my i7 2600k at 1.43v for the past 2 years. Never had any problems and the cpu is still going strong. 1.55v is pushing it though!
Here's something interesting about the new 5ghz AMD CPU by Linus of Linus/NCIX tech tips. He explains what is required to run this CPU without running into issues. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA_2KAL3Pe0&feature=c4-overview&list=UUjTCFFq605uuq4YN4VmhkBA
This cpu is targeted to people with plenty of money but no brains Seriously, even AMD fans are trashing this out. Bring the new generation of CPUs, we need some competition, Intel is releasing the same cpus for 2 generations.
Also what is bad about this CPU if you do not get the correct motherboard that can handle the 220W TDP you are going to toast your motherboard. Way to go AMD invent a CPU that can toast your mobo if the user does not do their research.
Yeah the same CPU that nearly halves total platform power while increasing integrated graphics performance, right.
