    Hey all!

I'm really excited about soft modding the 9700. I always have bought nvidia because it seems to run maya with fewer issues. But now that you can convert the 9x00 to a FireGL i'm seriously thinking of making the switch! The only problem I dont see anyone asking is can you softmod in linux? I mean has anyone tryed installing linux and load the FireGL X1 drivers? Will Linux accept the installion of the firegl drivers? I'm just curious since Nvidia has pretty good driver support for linux unlike ATI (well except for their FireGL cards). If not I'll prob wait on Unwinder to softmod the FX cards.

    Thanx for any info!

ps. Ty Unwinder for the great work!

    @unwinder:

many thanks for your work and efforts on the patch.

unfortunately i can't get rid of one problem. my 9500 pro now runs as a fire gl z1. as far as i know, it's not possible to make it run as a x1.

it's weird, but somehow i can only install the z1 driver for the primary display. as soon as i install the gl driver for the secondary display, the system won't recognize the graphics card as a fire gl any more (after reboot). what could be the problem?

by the way, i already searched the forum, couldn't find any hint.

i am currently using driver version 1020.

    thanks in advance.

i had that same problem but i fix it by using the 1032 drivers, problem is that i dont have the configuration and the informaton tab in the display properties

thanks for the hint, gonna try that tonight.

which tab do you mean? with the 1020, i had three fire gl tabs i guess. one was for choosing a certain application like solid edge or autocad to make these programs run best.

the other one was for screen adjustment (size. position). sorry, can't remember the last one. so, you don't even have those three?

do you also have a 9500 pro patched to a z1?

Hey Unwinder, thanks for the tip everythings seems to be working now...how ever I dont see any improvment between the z1 and the z1pro drivers, I thought the pro drivers would enable 8pipelines on a 9500pro.

I think i might do some more researching.

You can select even X1 during installation, it's nothing but just a string and it doesn't affect anything.

is there a dual dvi 256mb 9500 out there? I was looking at the X1, for use in XSI (I run a quadro 4 750XGL at home, QaudroFX2000 at work)

is anyone running one of the modded cards under XSI? (across dual mon)

    cheers,

Am I the only experiencing trouble with the 1032+ drivers ?

When running the 1024+ SoftGL script the patcher replies :
Browsing for file ati2mtgl.sys... selected 6.13.10.1036, 540416 bytes
WARNING: Certified patch script not found, using common patch script...

At the bottom of the patch-log it says that is has succesfully patch the file, so I'm thinking : great, lets install, boot, bench with Specview 7.1.

Using 1028-1034 drivers I get the same results as using the regular Catalyst drivers :-/

Only when using 1036 I can get close to what some other users have reported . Results around 16-18 points in the 3dsmax test.

I also tried using the run_all in Specview 7.1, but after having completed all tests but one: it stalls. A few minutes passes by, and then the resolution drops to 640 and an error-box appears stating that the device driver causes a malfunction, and that I need to reboot.

And that's not only when running Specview perf, it has also happened while using Polytrans. Same error-message.

With 1036 Maya crashes sometimes without any particular reason, with 1032 a fat black bar is present in the right side of the screen at 1600x1200.

I'm using a Club3d 9700 non-pro with 3.3 RAM-chips ( not the top of the line chips, but it was also considerably cheaper than other 9700-nonpro cards )

Any thoughts, advice , any input would be most welcome.

Please advice, my system seems to be working fine, but I'm wondering if it's normal for Rivatuner not to display driver settings? It only displays "No supported drivers detected for this display adapter" (I'm guessing I should pay attention to "supported"...?). I've read this monster thread and older threads to february, but this one escapes me.

The display properties -> settings -> advanded -> information tab informs that the display adapter is "ATI Unknown adapter" and chipset as "FGL 9700".

The display adapter I have is Connect 3D R9500Pro 128mt -> bios modded to 9700/pro. No OC atm.

I've tried the drivers from the ATI site (fireglx1z1-win2kxp-1032.exe) and the Dell ones (R61026.EXE). Now i have read the hole thread, but i miss one answer, thats my problem :-(
Is it possible to patch a radeon 9500 / 128MB to a Fire GL X1 with 8 pipelines?
If i patch the Radeon 9500 to a Radeon 9700 Riva Tuner shows me 8 pipelines, if i patch the same one to a Fire GL X, RT shows me only 4 pipelines.
Quake shows me Fire GL Z, yes i am also a gamer, but i uses 3D-Studio for my visualisations.
I use the latest Fire GL driver ( 1036 ) with all 13 patches.
What is going wrong, or is it not possible?
Another question is to patch a GF4 A280 (NV28) to softquadro.
    Does it work and how.
    Thanks for the answers.

As I've understood, you "can" mod a non-pro card with the right memory configuration to a 9700 pro, if I remember correctly the memory modules need to be in L-shape. But you 9500np might also be defective on the additional 4 pipelines and display a checkboard picture on your screen.

    9500np -> 9700 pro
9500np -> X1 (check that you actually did apply the right patch on your drivers, since quake is reporting it as a Z1)

In other words, if you are lucky you can mod your 9500np to X1 (256bit memory, 8 pipelines)
If unlucky the additional 4 pipelines are unusable and you're stuck with a 256bit (with the right memory conf), 4 pipeline card.

9500 pro can be bios modded to 9700/pro to allow overclocking (but it still has 128bit, 8 pipelines)

    Yes, that`s right. It`s a Sapphire 9500 128MB Atlantis.
Riva Tuner shows the following if i patch it to a Radeon 9700:
$ffffffffff ATI specific display adapter information
    $ffffffffff ---------------------------------------------------
    $0900000000 Graphics core : R300 (8x1)
    $0900000002 Memory bus : 256-bit
$0900000001 Memory type : DDR SGRAM / SDRAM
    $0900000003 Memory amount : 128MB
    $0900000004 Core clock : 324.000MHz
    $0900000005 Memory clock : 317.250MHz (634.500MHz effective)
    $0900000006 Reference clock : 27.000MHz
The Device Manager shows: Radeon 9700/9500 Series

Beside. If i patch the card, i have only a Radeon 9700.
If i overclock the radeon 9700 then i have a Pro.
The core clock of a Radeon 9700 is only 275MHz.
The core clock of a Radeon 9700 Pro is 325MHz.
These are the difference between non Pro and Pro.
    (Think i am right)

    >But you 9500np might also be defective on the additional 4 >pipelines and display a checkboard picture on your screen.

No, there are no checkboard pictures. Everything is allright.

    >9500np -> 9700 pro
    >9500np -> X1 (check that you actually did apply the right patch >on your drivers, since quake is reporting it as a Z1)

Riva Tuner shows also that i have a Z1 with 4x1.
What is the right patch? I uses the latest Riva Tuner (RC 12.4) and the Driver Version 6.13.10.1036.
    Patch 1024+ (27.04.2003)
    ;FireGL X1-128 AGP (128 MB)
ATI FireGL X1-128 SECONDARY Video Accelerator=FGLRY,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E67&SUBSYS_01731002
    ATI FireGL X1-128 Video Accelerator=FGLRY,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E47&SUBSYS_01721002
    All 13 Antiprotections ( patched)

    >In other words, if you are lucky you can mod your 9500np to X1 >(256bit memory, 8 pipelines)
    >If unlucky the additional 4 pipelines are unusable and you're >stuck with a 256bit (with the right memory conf), 4 pipeline card.

Is there a another tool, where i can check that my card works realy with 8 pipelines?

    >9500 pro can be bios modded to 9700/pro to allow overclocking >(but it still has 128bit, 8 pipelines)

    No 9500pro.

First i have installed the Radeon 9700/9500 drivers, rebooted, and the i have choosed under the device manager new driver, and selected the Fire GL drivers ( primery and secondary ).
(i am so sorry about my english, it is not my country language
    :D )
    Any suggestions?

    Best regards

I've been trying to get the FireGL drivers to get to work with my 9600 TX (see carddetails below) using unwinders patch. Unfortunately it doesn't work for me. I think this because the deviceID of the 9600 TX differs from 'normal' 9x00 boards. Unwinder's article is not noob-proof in explaining exactly what has to be modified in the FireGL drivers in order for them to work on a 9x00 board:

I think I roughly get the idea of this, but I haven't been able to figure out exactly what part of what files actualy have to be changed (me being quite unexperienced at this sort of thing and all).

My question: does anyone know how I can modify unwinders patch so it can make the FireGL drivers work with my 9600 TX?

Card details (copy / pasted from the driver that originaly came with the board, they are the same number I get when I run ATI utilities):

    "MEDION RADEON 9600 TX" = ati2mtag_R300, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E46&SUBSYS_84841787
    "MEDION RADEON 9600 TX " = ati2mtag_R300, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E46&SUBSYS_84861787
    "MEDION RADEON 9600 TX Secondary" = ati2mtag_R300, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E66&SUBSYS_84851787
    "MEDION RADEON 9600 TX Secondary " = ati2mtag_R300, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E66&SUBSYS_84871787

    vendorid=1002 ,
    device id = 4e46 and 4e66 (secondary)
    substem id & subsystem vendor id's: 8484 1787 ; 8486 1787 ; 8485 1787 ; 8487 1787

specific 9500 for fireGl X1 upgrade?

I heard somewhere that there were some radeon 9500's that didn't work with this upgrade (can't remember which form though). Has anyone else heard anything on this matter? Can any radeon 9500 work? Thanks a lot for you time
