Is the titan suppose to be the 780 gtx???

I understood the Titan to be a distinct animal from the forth comming 780 gtx. However I have seen some sites calling the Titan the 780 gtx Titan. Have I gotten it wrong?? and if the 780gtx is still forthcomming, does anyone have a time frame for the 780gtx?? I have two 480 gtxs and would like to upgrade from for more umph for Far Cry 3 and Crysis 3 but I am also aware that next year Maxwell should be a Giant leap forward even compared to Titan. Hence my angst, should I buy two 680s for say roughly 900 dollars and upgrade to Maxwell or if the 780 gtxs are comming soon hold out for them. The Titan seems to be way overpriced and while I can afford to Sli two Titans, they will likely be rendered middle of the road in performance next year when Maxwell comes out. I would appreciate any advice for what to upgrade to in the near term as I will probably opt for Maxwell next year. Thank you!

 

No i dont think it is the 780.

780 will be a seperate card, I think the 780 wont be as powerful as Titan regarding shaders but will have a higher core clock.

Will be interesting when 780 arrives as it will confirm to me whats more important regarding fps performance, either shaders or core.

atm its all core for me as it drives everything, Ill take a higher core over shaders anytime but i could be wrong but time will tell.

 

P. S. I forgot to add that I am using a dell 30 inch monitor and will therefore like to be gamming at 2500 by 1600. Any recommendations for new cards would likely need to factor the 30 inch monitor into the equation. Again thanks for any replies!

 

No my guess is the 700 series will be a gk104 refresh as maybe gk114? Faster clocked more shaders?

I was wondering this myself due to the price of the Titan. It's like they jumped ahead a bit in the release of progressively more powerful cards. I wonder what the 790 will end up as? Maybe they'll name it "Colossus"?

 

Well i was thinking that as well but, it still falls in 600 series if you look at driver downloads.

 

My guess is Titan was the original 680. When Nvidia saw the performance of HD79xx they decided not to release it as it would be completely out in its own league, hence the release of a cut down core, and giving it to the 680. Hence the 680 is GK104 - since when has that been the high end designation?

Yes GK104 never was, and like you said GK104 competed with 7970, but not anymore.. They wanted to lure people with lower wattage and all that since GK110 uses same or more as 7970.

It would be wiser if they named it 685GTX or something, not this separate bling bling.. Its Kepler after all - that true high end 28nm.

 

With the release of the Titan,prices for the 680GTX should come down a bit. Two of any 600 series Nvidia cards should handle 2560x1600. In my opinion.

 

They compete in a different league, i don't think it will affect the 680 MSRP at all however if AMD decides to reduce (again) the price of the 7970 perhaps that will force NVIDIA to do something...

Not based on the performance benches. The 600's will be with us until the end of this year at most likely the same price point. Personally the Titan is overpriced for all it brings to the table 6GB vram seems to be the best improvement IMO. Even overclocked it reaches 660ti/670 SLI performance. Quite underwhelming for a 1k price tag.

I have seen it rumored the GTX 700's and the HD8000's will be with us Q4 2013. Its too long for me to wait to get an upgrade. And in the same rumor mill it looked like they were saying 700's would be GK114 as mentioned above.

 

you guys realize titan is just old Tesla K20X released for general consumer..
all this guesswork is kinda silly and its not geforce 700 series either

its named titan because Tesla K20X powers worlds fastest super computer named Titan, hence graphic card name as its suppose to be super computer card for general user " lots of blahblah marketing rubish "

 

I recall from Nvidia statements when HD79xx series was released they were surprised at its relatively low performance compared to what they stated they had in production.

Hence the release of the cut down gk104 to compete with it, saving money in fabrication, and leaving an uber high end part to release on the same architecture whenever they felt the time was right.

Well by default its ~ 2x 660TI, OC'ed at 1ghz+ ~2x 670 GTX, so you were sayin'?
