    Hey guys!

I have a pretty big dilemma: I've been planning a build for months now, and I have everything picked out, but I'm beginning to question my choice to opt for a 3930K.
The benchmarks show that in most cases the i7-3770k outperforms the i7-3930k as shown in this link:

    http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/551?vs=552

I am planning on doing macro programming, using Visual Studio 2012, compiling, graphics, working on big programs, multitasking and the works. Really won't need it for gaming that much.
What do you guys think? I could really use some advice.

    Here's my planned system:

Graphics Adapter: 3072 MB ATI Radeon HD7970
    System Memory: 16 GB [2x 8GB] DDR3-1866 Corsair Vengeance
Hard Disk / SSD: 250 GB SSD + 1,0 TB hard disk drive
CPU Cooler: 3x120mm Silent Zalman CNPS12X High Performance
    Motherboard: ASUS P9X79 Deluxe
    Case: NZXT Phantom Big-Tower black
Power Supply: BeQuiet Dark Power Pro 10 | 750W (80+ Gold)

that bench was done at the stock clock speeds for each cpu. 3.5ghz for the 3770k and 3.2ghz for the 3930k. if you need an 6 c 12t cpu get the 3930k, if you dont get the 3770k and save a lot of cash.

And if you do go with 3930K then get quad channel ram, preferably 4x4Gb 2133mhz CL9 (ie G.skill RipjawZ)and Asus X79Pro - no need for deluxe.

Also that mobo is only LGA2011 compatible, you would need something like Z77 chipset for 3770K.

+1 on 2133 memory and a different board.

Clock for clock i7 3770k is faster now for raw power i7 3930k is a faster since it has extra 2 extra core and 2 extra threads but games right now don't really take advantage of 6 core so I would just stick with i7 3770k. I heard x79 is getting an 8 core with hyperthreading soon and that will make it a 16 logical cores.

the 3930k has 2 more cores and 4 more threads than a 3770k

Big programs, graphics and such. I'd go with the 3930 if you can afford it. I notice slow downs on my 2600k@4.7 on photoshop files over 2gb. Get into a 400 dpi real size file looking at 30 minutes for some filters. Filters and rendering are instant at 300 dpi on a 24" x 20" file.

A lot of people say new cpu's are over powered. When your business depends on big file production I can say a 4 core, 8 thread, no matter how good people think it is, still is not fast enough.

Cs6 maxes out all "8 cores" on mine for alien skin filters. Just as bad as intel burn or prime.

Be careful with that memory, because the Zalman CNPS 12X doesn't leave much space for large sticks. That's why I opted for Vengeance Low Profile using the same cooler. It's a great cooler, though.

A reasonable percentage of the extra money and performance (to an extent) of that CPU is due to the quad-channel memory controller. You might as well make use of it!
