It's officially game over for publisher THQ. A federal bankruptcy judge has approved the beleaguered video game publisher's plan to sell its assets to several companies for $72 million, reports Bloo...

'Most notable is the acquisition of action series Saints Row and creators Volition Inc. by Koch Media, the company that owns Dead Island publisher Deep Silver. The company also snagged the rights to first-person shooter Metro: 2033 and the soon-to-be released Metro: Last Light.

Poor 'Metro: Last Light', hopefully it's found a caring home.

that's the best place for pc heavy dev team tbh. look at creative assembly they are doing great under sega. so i'm rather happy that sega acquired most likely warhammer 40k, coh and homeworld with relic.

This is just... /saaaadface. They made so many great games, the latest being Saints Row 3 wich I absolutely loved!

I really wonder what will happen to Vigil Games, the developers of Darksiders 1+2, apparently THQ was more than just the publisher and nobody bought them at the auction. This is so bad, Darksiders especially the second one are one of the best action/rpg games I ever played...

This is a sad day, for gamers and the employees. No company with potential (CoH2 and Metro sequel) should end up like this :(

A shame for the employees, but if they weren't running the company propertly then hard to feel too sorry for them.

Not a fan of many, if any of THQ's IP's, but Koch Media taking on Metro makes sense as i'm sure they published Stalker.

Notice of SEGA’s Acquisition of Relic Entertainment and Some IPs Owned by THQ Inc.

Notice of SEGA’s Acquisition of Relic Entertainment and Some IPs Owned by
    THQ Inc.

    Business Wire

    SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON & TOKYO -- January 24, 2013

SEGA Corporation (Headquarters: Tokyo, President, Representative Director, and
Chief Operating Officer: Naoya Tsurumi, “SEGA”) acquired all of shares of THQ
Canada Inc. (Headquarters: Vancouver, Canada, “THQ Canada”) and some IPs owned
by THQ Inc., a parent company of THQ Canada on January 24, 2013 in order to
further reinforce PC game development capabilities in the U.S. and European
regions. THQ Canada has developed million-seller franchise titles such as
“Warhammer 40k Dawn of War” and “Company of Heroes” under the brand of Relic
    Entertainment Studio.

Relic Entertainment was established in 1997 and acquired by THQ Canada in
2004. THQ Canada have been known familiarly as Relic Entertainment since the
acquisition and provided a number of high quality games equipped with graphics
equal in quality to movies and rich strategic game features mainly for the PC
market in the U.S. and European regions. THQ Canada provides several million
seller franchise titles, and its representative products include the
“Warhammer 40k Dawn of War” series. As a series Warhammer 40k Dawn of War has
sold more than 7 million copies worldwide, whilst the “Company of Heroes”
series, a real time strategy game based on the modern history of warfare from
World War II and after, has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide.

“We are thrilled to have Relic Entertainment join the SEGA family. The
acquisition is a strategic fit and a critical step in growing our business,”
John Cheng, President and CFO, SEGA of America said. “They are a
well-respected studio with a reputation for making creative and innovative
games and we look forward to seeing what great things we can create together
    over the coming years.”

SEGA already owns three development companies in the U.S. and Europe, and is
progressing to support compatibility with the rapidly expanding online games
field, such as PC online games, smartphone games and social games. As a result
of the THQ Canada acquisition, SEGA will further advance the provision of
various appealing entertainment contents by utilizing THQ Canada’s high-end
content development capabilities and accumulated development know-how, and
increase SEGA’s presence in the PC online game market.

Relic nor THQ owned the rights to Homeworld, i believe it's Vivendi (through Sierra) that own that IP. That's the only reason a Homeworld 3 hasn't been made already and it will never be made unless Sega or someone pays for the IP.

In November 2007, THQ finally confirmed that it had acquired the license for the Homeworld franchise but didn't confirm a sequel maintaining that it had no comments on future games from THQ based on Homeworld.

//Homeworld is included in a batch of inactive and legacy assets yet to be auctioned. For now, it is held by THQ. We can only hope Sega bring it to Relic.//

Ok so it's up for grabs still hope sega goes for it.

That's even worse, THQ had it for that long and just sat on it...

Got to admit that I enjoyed a couple of THQ games. Sad!

This might not be the most appropriate time to express my opinion, but I would have to agree with this. I would also be very surprised if Homeworld isn't considered a major target for IP acquisition.

And were told they're not getting to work on darksiders any more, since they didn't buy that license.

Not that much point as far as the games are concerned, guess they keep their jobs, maybe we'll see them do something similar.

Yea that's a shame, but maybe another action-rpg like darksiders 2 with cryengine will come out at some point. :)
