My parents 2001 Dell is BSODing and I think it is time for an upgrade. I have put together this wishlist. http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=14801114 All they do on the machine is email, youtube, flash games, and openoffice. I am trying to go as cheap a possible, but would like it to ast them a long time technology-wise. I am open to an APU setup because they will probably never need strong computation but may want better video later. Any suggestions would be welcome
An APU might be a better bet. Sure, the CPU cores aren't the best, but they're more than enoiugh for web and office use, that and the iGPU can run 1080p video and some games with ease.
Here's a Llano build AMD A4-3400 $70 Asrock A55M-HVS $56 XFX 450W $30 AR DVD burner $16 dat crucial ram kit $23 = $195 AR Obviously you have case and hdd already. But shouldn't a HDD from 2001 be IDE...?
Lehtv's suggestion is better than going with the Celeron... Intel excel in the high end CPU's, but AMD excels with the lower end (or more 'mainstream) market with the APU's. Unfortunately the next gen APU won't be out in time for you to purchase that instead since its much better. You need a new HDD too, I would recommend the following 500GB one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148767&Tpk=ST500DM002 These new Seagate drives are fast, you don't want to cripple the computers performance by having a bottleneck in the form of a bad performing hdd. Obviously the better versions are 750GB and above, but the next step available is the 1tb version which costs around $30 more. Be very careful of the model numbers, don't buy the old models!
I am getting an ebay HDD http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Western...100?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item256e187b24 As for the case, is this stuff going to fix correctly in their old Dell case?
That 160GB WD is pretty expensive mate...for another $35 you could have this 500GB HDD What type of case is it? If it's a standard ATX then yes everything will fit.
Yeah that 160GB definitely isn't worth it. The 500GB I linked earlier would be ideal. Its not just the fact that its 3 times larger, but its also 'noticeably' faster.
How much space do your parents really need? Wouldn't a 64GB SSD be enough? It'd make the system a ton snappier without adding to the cost versus a HDD.
I would go for the Celeron build. It is easier to add a video card than try to figure if you are better off with a higher APU vs Video card. You can get good open box deals from newegg on video cards. I expect they will be using an older low resolution monitor, so on chip video should be fine. FWIW I think Trinity is a new Socket FM2, so FM1 may not see any upgrades beyond Llano. If you can wait for Ivy Bridge Pentium/Celeron I believe improved on chip graphics will be included. Not that the Celeron should have any difficulty short of 3D.
A couple of things; firstly the 64GB Crucial SSD in your link is $95 - that's $10 more than the 500GB Seagate HDD. Secondly, the ASRock motherboard you suggested only supports SATA II....so installing a SATA III SSD would be kinda pointless... Fwiw I do understand where you're coming from, but imho a budget system like the OP wants would not benefit from an SSD. The OP also said this build will last a very long time, so 4 yrs from now 64GB may not be enough...
@baverdi, Seeing as you are in Chicago, I put together a cart for the Microcenter in Chicago/Central, matching as close as I could, only I picked better RAM: YOUR CART » Gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2 LGA 1155 H61 mATX Intel Mothe... I think 1 of them amd apu`s would be better just for the better integrated graphics compared to the crap integrated graphics on the intel. missing a hard drive^^
They cost about the same No it wouldn't. A couple of things: 1. it'd still be a hell of a lot faster than a hard drive, obviously 2. SATA II SSD's aren't any cheaper than SATA III SSD's 3. SATA III motherboards are more expensive than SATA II motherboards How so? It'd speed up the system considerably. 4 years down the line, or at some point between now and then, hard drives are going to go for a lot cheaper than they do now. If the cheapo build isn't going to be significantly cheaper with a HDD, and the extra space of a HDD isn't needed (which is still an unknown as the OP hasn't replied), why limit the PC to HDD speeds?
^Speed up the system considerably? Please elaborate because I don't see how an SSD would "speed up the system" when the most it will be doing is surfing the net... I'm not going to get drawn into an endless debate, bottom line is it's not worth it.
