But it's large for 5MP and 8MP images. Which is the whole point in it. Are you seriously comparing camera phone to dSLR? It's obvious that you can't cram in the same lenses. You should compare these to point and shoot cameras and this has way bigger sensor than in most point and shoot cameras.

Should still be much better than rest of the camera phones. Will be good enough for people who want to take a picture and not carry huge camera with them. You have expensive camera and it's your hobby to take pictures, that phone is not for you.

No guys, don't get me wrong. Of course it'll take good pictures. But I'll hate to see the ad campaign. "new Nokia, 41MP camera blah blah blah" it's like iPhone ads boasting about video calls. 41 MP is pointless. My canon 40D takes pics in 10 mp. More than enough. And that had a LOT bigger sensor.

Cramming that much in a small sensor should result in worse photos shouldn't it? Resolution doesn't equal quality. If it was this easy then every man and his dog would be making stupid-MP cameras.

Yep, equals to more noise in low light. Low light photos on this will be awful.

Have you checked out the low light videos? I haven't seen other phones coming even close. In any case this will take better low light shots that any other camera phone.

the point with that 41mp sensor is to scale pics down to 8/5mp so they will look almost perfect... just think about it, when you see a 8mp pic in your 1080p monitor, the thing looks EXCELENT unless you zoom it to 100% scale, then it losses all the detail, but if you got a ridiculous big resolution pic, doesnt matter how big is your screen, it will look good, is a "pixel density" thing i think

Looking at video and sample pics it looks like it will make a fantastic camera, that also has some smartphone features.

I do worry about the long term future of Nokia though, i can't say it would tempt many, if any away from Android or ios phones though.

I'd be all over the place if my Galaxy S would take pics like this:

(FYI you can easily see the shoe maker in the original picture)

Definitely looking forward to this technology. Maybe they get something similar for WP8 next year.

ok, down scaling will get rid of a lot of noise, but also a lot of detail. Plus, how large will those 41MP photos be?

... You do understand that there are benefits in downscaling?

Yes, but there's more negatives than positives. It's as simple as that.

I don't agree with that. You are essentially saying that supersampling in games result in worse image (not quite the same thing but still).

Were not talking games. Photography works completely differently.

Image quality wise i don't see any phone coming near it, so wouldn't call anything about the camera a negative.

Of course. In this case oversampling can be used to reduce noise for example. Also they more than likely use something a bit more intelligent than just pure downsampling algorithms. I wouldn't count on it that same sensor but with 5 mega pixels would offer better quality than this when downsampled.

The problem here is there just will be too much noise at that res. You can down size it to get rid of it or you can use a 5mp camera that will produce a lot less noise. Results will be very similar.
