Does DRM influence your purchase of a game?

I hate DRM in all its forms, but some more than others.


Securom and the like - Eat my shorts.


Steam can be made to do as its told, back up the game folders before you go online and if a forced update wrecks your game (Skyrim for instance) you can go offline and put things back as they were. Steam then goes back behind my firewall and if it don't like it, it can - Eat my shorts.


Origins, my information is mine and I put a high price on it, so either offer to pay me for it or - Eat my shorts.


Ubisoft, I'd rather rim my own blowhole.


When I pay my hard earned for a game I want to be left alone to enjoy it.



The day that I permenantly unplug my gaming rig from the Nettie is getting closer, ho hum.

I do get annoyed with games like GTAIV where you have to register with Rockstart Social Club AND GFWL after you bought it from steam.....

That DOES take the piss.

But it hasn't stopped by buying,

EVEN UBISoft games <--- Rather that than the stupid crap GTAIV came with.

 

By the time I finally got everything setup to play GTAIV for the first time, I had already lost interest and didn't even play it. (I didn't pay for it, I received it as a gift).

 

DRM has never bothered me to be honest until UbiSoft's controversial and very draconian always-online DRM for Assassin's Creed II. It was then that I realised what a hindrance DRM could be when done very, very badly as it was there (I often could not log in for hours and constantly got booted out of the game). Now we have EA's awful Origin service in its unfinished beta state and about as buggy as a one-year old corpse left out to rot!

Apart from those, most DRM works fine, even Steam, requiring a one-time activation with a serial key and no disc requirement thereafter. If any do require the disc then I simply download a NoDVD crack to bypass it. Problem solved! I own the original anyway so I don't see that I'm doing anything illegal.

 

If publishers/developers were to see the votes from this, it would be clear that DRM can lose them sales.

 

Bit late but answer to this - No.

I buy what I want when I want as long as it's something i want and doesnt harm my setup or be sub-par or effectively harm something else.

P.S no offense but i think a lot of the votes on here positive are from americans and we all know how you like your liberty..not a bad thing i guess us brits (me) are a bit more stoic. i ofc 100% see why some people dont like it..

 

DRM that limits your amount of installs is the devil

 

you could argue you should be more organized....but then again why should u...it's your game/pc!!

If publishers/developers were to see the votes, i doubt it would make them take notice, need to be a couple hundred thousand people voting, not a couple of hundred.

Unfortunately, the comments contradict everything anyway, when people say things like "Yes, it does affect my purchase, except when..........." it completely invalidates everything.

I won't go near anything with always online DRM, just can't take the risk, but Diablo3 will sell a crap load, which will tell other publishers that it doesn't matter what DRM you use, as long as the game is good/popular.

It's not like Rayman Origins is going to break records, just because the retail version is completely DRM free.

At the end of the day people complain about it, but the majority who were going to buy the game will still buy it, all your going to lose are those who are sitting on the fence, or who physically won't be able to play it, which these days probably isn't that many people.

 

The only DRM that had me worried was BF3 because battlelog, technically their drm, is browser based. You could say origin is the drm but I dont even worry about it.

I have games using every drm. Securom, GFWL, origin, steam, etc etc. None bother me. And hey, if EA wants to use their glorified Eula to see my porn, I say go for it EA, I have good stuff.

 

I don't think there's an argument, you bought the game, you have the right to install it however many times you want if that's how you like to use your game. I'd love to see a limit on other media, like DVDs or Blu Rays. "You can only register this disk on 3 Blu Ray players" It's dumb and has no benefit for the user, and gives people a reason to pirate.

 

Haven't touched a ubisoft made game in years and I refuse to buy Diablo 3 blizzard can go **** themselves!
