yeah its the first thing i tried but it still wont get dittected in the 1st slot (16x) but it does get dettected in the 2nd slot (8x) all afer i took one card out of its sli setup.
could my 16x slot be broken somehow?

You can try 1 or 2 things- 1st remove both cards and clean the pins with paper, but be careful not to damage the resistors at the bottom of the cards, then reinsert them. If this doesn't help try both cards on another PC if u have that option. But do this with PSU not connected to the wall socket and u can try to remove 24pin MB connector :) hope this helps :) Good luck :)

1st : i do not have the second card in my system as i sold it, so its just 1 gigabyte gtx 570 rev 2.0 .
2: it works on my other computer on the 16x slot.
3: i was told never to touch the gold pins . so how should i clean it with paper?

Would there be any need to clean it ? sure it doesn't cost much to do it(methanol and cotton swab).

I am also wondering which way you use to get this info ? GPU-Z or CPU-Z ? AIDA or else ? maybe ther's nothing wrong just a mistake somewhere because why would it occur anyway ?

so your 570 is not pluged atm ? (sorry stupid question probably but i never use onboard graphic so my apologises)
Anyway you certainly tried the whole procedure of unninstalling/reinstalling drivers ? because i don't know what's happening there.

Try reading with another softawre maybe ? (but why would GPU-Z fail ??)
I hope you haven't searched round the drivers yet ...

Try moving it to PCIe Slot 2
Hope that solves the problem for you

their are only 2 pcie slots in my mobo 1 on 16x the other one on 8x i have confirmed that it does work with on the 8x but why shouldn't it work on the 16x? and in the past i have used a gtx 560 ti on the 1st 16x slot.

What does the periferic manager says about that ? There will probably be something to test there.

Also, try changing the pci-e cable from the PSU

I guess my next question would be...Do you have anything else plugged into any of the other PCIe or PCI Slots besides the card?
Also you might try updating your drivers for the board as the ASRock versions are "dated" esp the Intel and ASMedia ones...

    http://station-drivers.com/page/asrock/z68extreme7gen3.htm

What software lead you to believe that your single card in PCIe slot 2 was running at 8X and not 16X?

Oh Boy I goofed I misread your signature and thought you had the Extreme 7 Gen 3 board...Will do some more research and by all means post at Tweaktown for ASRock Support...

O.K. after reading thru your manual for the Extreme 3 Gen 3 the same logic still applies and you should with a single card use the PCIe Slot 2 to get 16x
(When you had 2 cards you were only getting 8X in each slot)

So if it does work in PCIe Slot 2 then what is leading you to believe that it is only running at 8X and not 16X?

Flash to the latest UEFI 1.30 for your board

    http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?Model=Z68 Extreme3 Gen3&o=BIOS.html

SET UEFI defaults then make the changes needed but NO O'Clock yet!
Without any O'Clock-ing SEE if your card is detected in PCIe 2 Slot. If it is then chances are your overclock that I see in your screencaps above might be the reason ...Just a thought
