Hello cool people of Guru3d. I've got a couple of questions I hope your great minds can assist me with. Currently I have the following computer specs:

    ASUS P6T Deluxe V2, X58, Socket-1366
Intel Core i7 Quad Processor i7-920
    XFX Radeon HD 5870
    Corsair Powersupply TX 850W
    Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600MHz 6GB CL9

My question is now, I was planing on purchasing a couple of upgrades for my computer. I was thinking of buying the following to begin with, this month:

    Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600MHz 12GB CL9
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 580 3072MB PhysX

Which leads me to my next question, will my current hardware by any way bottleneck the graphic card? And this might be a bit off topic, but the ram I'm buying, will I be able to support it? I'm a complete computer newb! Also if you have recommendations for any other graphic cards within the price range of the 580, feel free to suggest it.

    Thanks in advance!

No, you will not have a bottleneck.

Thats not a question AFAIK. :p

But no, you will not have a bottleneck

Also, maybe this ram will be cheaper than the corsair.

    not very much.
get a coolermaster 212+ good and cheap.
1366 chips run hotter than sandybridge
you should be looking at 3.6ghz or so

Would there be a noticeable difference if I chose to not clock it, at all?

To be honest, neither the extra RAM, nor the video card is a worthy purchase.

I'll start with the RAM. 12 GB would be nice, only if your system was making any use of it. Unfortunately for high-end PC owners, the vast majority of software today is still 32-bit and cannot use more than 2GB of the RAM.

The video card. The GTX 580 is a solid 30% faster that the 5870, but less than a handful of games (I can think of only 3 actually: Crysis, Metro 2033 and upcoming Battlefield 3) tax the card enough to make you see any difference in typical resolutions. It does not offer newer DIRECTX technology and it is already 1 year old, with the next GPU lineup on the horizon.

well the next gen amd and nvidia were delayed well into 2012. OP youll notice a huge difference overclocking from your 2.66ghz chip

New GPUs aren't for at least ~4 months but yeah, gtx 580 is awful value for the money. I recommended getting a gigabyte soc gtx 570 or msi pe/oc gtx 570
You really need to OC the CPU, 2.6ghz to 3.6ghz~4ghz is like day and night in most games. easily +15~ fps

So you are recommending moving from a hd 5870 to a gtx 570 because it's good value for money? ...really? lol.

    Thanks.

I guess I'll get a cooler and give the overclocking a try! As well as a cheaper card since the new cards are around the corner.

    Once again thanks everyone :).

OP will only see a 10% performance difference in some games going to from a 5870 to a gtx 570, not worth it. Either get a gtx 580 3GB or don't bother with the graphics card, unless you want more vram in which case there's 1.5GB and 2GB models that will serve you better.

BZ your right forgot he had a 5870, was going by the 285 in the pro, a 570 is not a good upgrade from that OP

So the conclusion is to basically purchase that cooler which I linked, overclock my CPU and wait for new hardware? :D

If you're going to pay that much for the graphics card then you might aswell get this:

    For higher performance:

Same performance, good memory size and a lot cheaper:
