So I had a few extra comps to sell and decided to toss my 18 month old 470s in each one. I was getting a bit tired of the power consumption and how hot they got during load in some games (top card was 85-90c with max settings in crysis and the witcher2). I never had any major issues with sli, but was looking to start off with a single card at the moment. Been looking at the Asus GTX560Ti DCII OC 1GB and it's what I am leaning towards mainly because of how it can overclock, its low temps, and i've always been an nvidia fan. During my reviews the AMD 6950 (specifically the MSI R6950 Twin Frozr II OC 2GB) was mentioned as being on par with the 560ti, but I haven't messed with ati since my x1950pro =P. Is the software and drivers really that bad or is it mainly bs?

I've read enough articles, but can't seem to make up my mind so I wanted to ask some 560 owners and even a few ati peeps (if they read this) to comment on what they think.

I game at 1920x1080 with multiple monitors and also hook up my 50'' samsung from time to time.

    I'll never go tri+ sli.

One thing I did notice is that the 6950 idles at least 10+ degrees warmer, but uses less power.

Will the 560ti be a better option for cooler temps if I decide to go sli ? or will it not be a big temp difference at all regardless of nvidia or ati sli/cf with the cards being right next to each other ?

I do like to overclock, but nothing super crazy. Just a bit to get some extra performance.

Both the msi 6950 and asus 560ti are on sale for $229.99 after $20-30 rebate. Cost is not a huge issue, but not looking to spend $300 or more atm. Possibility of sli/cf in 2-3 months.

I by no means know near as much as most of the guys on here , but going from a Sli set of 470's , if you were wanting the same performance with a single card.....I believe you would need something along the lines of a 580. Going to a single 560TI isn't going to give you near the performance of a SLI 470 setup. In fact , I would think a single 470 would give a 560TI a run for the money in most games , and even out perform it in some others.

I think a 560TI in Sli would be about on par with what you had before ( Sli 470's ). If you wanted to stay with Sli , I would either get a set of 570's , or go for a single 580. This all depends on your budget as well. And if it doesn't matter.....hell , I'd get a set of 580's and forget about it.

Again , I'm still learning , and I try and do all the reading I can , so I could be wrong on some of that. But from what I "have" read , it seems I summed it up pretty well.

hmm. my 560ti runs fairly cool at 60C at full load and performs quite well since mine is overclocked to 1ghz. but if youre running the cards that close together, cooling can be an issue.

but from the looks of things, your case is a haf X? if it is, just buy any cards with an open fan/heatsink design because the side fan should help you cool them more efficiently.

Oh I know I won't get near the performance with either single card from my sli setup haha. I may do sli/cf in a few months, but just looking for a decent card to do 45+ fps at good but not necessarily ultra settings. Just had the opportunity to sell my 470s so I did. Even with my haf 932 those bastards get warm. Haven't been gaming as much anymore either so a single cooler card will be just fine for now.

Also just want to see what some of the newer cards are all about. :) Just can't decide which one although I'm sure I'll have the msi 6950 TFII 2GB or the Asus ENGTX560 Ti DCII or even the msi 560ti TFII sometime sunday afternoon lol

    don't get 560 that's a down grade

470 creams 560 when you overclock it

whack on aftermarket cooler that will bring temperatures down

i watercool mine so they never go over 50c gaming

An dude your cards should easy hit 800 core each, mine hit 900+ each an at 900 core they almost fast as stock 580 :biggun:

i would wait till next generation cards on 28nm before would consider replacing my 470's as no card out worth the upgrade to at the minute.

Get a single 580 now for very good performance, then when you need incredispeed, add another :)
When you get SLI again, your expectation will be high having previously had decent performance, but games will have moved up a notch in requirements.
Your PSU is good for SLI 580.

You could get a 560 (majorly clocked ;)) for now and hang on for a newer gen card next year.

waste of cash ^ 580 doesn't beat 470 by enough in my eyes to justify its price, that's why i said to wait till next generation 28nm cards before replacing :biggun:

here P6555 in 3d mark 11 with single 470 card

Well, the 470s are sold and already in other comps, so there is no option of keeping one. I know I said I might sli or cf, but the chances are pretty high. Not buying a 580 due to a budget of around $300. I need something for now thats decent since I currently have nothing.

Going by what he had posted, he doesnt need to match the performance of his SLI 470 for now.
As a 580 owner, I can say that it is rare I need to overclock it at 1080p.
A GTX580 is a decent stand in until he needs more power.

I also suggested that an overclocked 560 might do him ok until the next gen cards arrive.
Covered the bases thought I :)
