I'm playing the beta on my lenovo y470 laptop. It has an i7 2630qm, 8gb ram, and a gt550m. I installed the latest battlefield drivers but while playing CPU usage won't go above 70% and GPU won't pass 65%. Is there a way to make it use more of my laptop's power to play better?

Set to high performance in nvcp, what are temps like?

I had it in both the high performance power plan and high performance in the nvidia control panel. My temperatures for the GPU typically stay in the 80s with occasional spikes to the mid 90s.

Interestingly, I also get brief stints where gpu usage will go up and my framerate will jump to the 50s. Then both usage and temp will cut back down. The game autodetects my settings to be in the medium-high range but i'm struggling on low.

Could it be a thermal issue?

Uhm yes, temps are terrible. Hitting 90 with 50% usage?... gpu is throttling.

I'm in a college dorm room. I had to leave my home-built desktop at home. This is far from a gaming laptop. It was the best spec'd 14'' laptop I could find under $1000 and I was hoping it could play battlefield.

ThrottleStop works on CPU's, not GPU's.

Dust it out, but i would take it apart and put nice TIM on it.

That exactly why I posted this. The 2630qm is known to have the bad habit to throttle to 798mhz in regular sessions.
I'm using the very same gpu althought with a much more powered gpu (gtx460m @ 830/1660/1600) and without TS my framerate would dip considerably in any game.

Worth a shot. If the CPU throttles without reason the gpu basically doesn't get feed up enough.

the cpu isnt throttling, its the gpu. It is useless

TBH if its hitting the mid 90's with 50% GPU usage, surely stopping it throttling will just be a quick way to kill the laptop.

Which setting do I use in throttlestop?

Everything got super hot using throttlestop.

No thanks on that one. Does my performance sound like a temporary issue or a laptop issue- ie- will this be worked out (either by myself or driveris in the coming weeks) or should I cancel my pre-order and plan on not being able to play bf3 with this laptop.

    lenovo y470
    i7 2630
    8gb ram
    550m
    win7 x64

also- i asked on reddit about other laptop users- people seem to be doing heaps better than i.

    @op
you not the only one and I spent like a hour talking to tech support and they still couldn't resolve the performance issue and told me to go on their forums and post.

It is a hardware problem, not software.
