I can't decide on my next upgrade and I need some opinions and maybe some reasons. First off let me say I'm waiting for bulldozer before a motherboard upgrade. Would it be better to go from a phenom 2 940 to a 980 or add another 6950 to to one I already have?
Id go with neither. Going from a 940 to a 980 isnt justifiable for the price and buying a 2nd 6950 is going to scream bottleneck all over.
I agree there would be a bottleneck. I suppose my question would be whats a good tide-me-over upgrade for around 200 bucks. I'm interested in FPS. Not much worried about HD performance or load times
I was gonna say an SSD, but it wouldnt yield more FPS like a new cpu or gpu. SSDs do improve FPS in some games though. Get this than, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103913 AMD 1100T... Only 200$. You could also flash your 6950 to a 6970 if its a reference card.
I flashed my card (easy money:banana when I bought it. as far as the 1100t I was kind of thinking of that, except it's my understanding that 6 core amd cpu's were actually worse than quad core for gaming? I could be wrong. I can't find any benchmarks that directly compare a 940be to an 1100t in games
isnt the 940 a black edition cpu anyway? just crank up your multiplier, viola, instant 980. and if youre gonna be upgrading to bulldozer anyway, dont bother upgrading the CPU since youre gonna ditch it anyway. just upgrade the gpu, because then you can at least re use it for bulldozer.
if we're talking about the 940, until bulldozer comes(whenever that is:3eyes if were talking about a new 6 core maybe around a year (which still could be when bulldozer comes out) @ sever I didn't know if optimization's in the architecture helped or not. plus the fastest I can get this thing is 3.5 stable. that's with a scythe heatsink and rosewill thermal paste
