Well I just got my PSU in the mail today and I opened it up and was like "Hmm something seems to be missing." After a few seconds I realize there is no power cord. I open the paperwork that came with it and it says "Note: No power cord included. By reusing your existing cord, you can reduce waste and help protect the environment." Umm okay. Anyways I was like well I can just buy one on newegg or something. Well after looking I don't know what the hell to buy. Some are $4 and some are like $40. I don't know what to look for and all that. And I know someone will just post a link and say buy this one. Thats cool but please tell me why and explain the differences between cords. Thank you much in advance.
higher wattage psu's have thicker power cables because of the amp/watts they can pull. lower wattages ones usually have thinner cables. since your in the states. if your anywhere near a radio shack, they carry power cords for our power supplies. they are pretty much universal. just make sure you get no smaller than a cord with 12ga wires in it.
Yeah I figured radio shack would have them but they charge an arm and a leg for stuff. So fudge that. Thanks for the info about the gages though.
the only valid reason for price could be thicker guage wire, along with the length of the cord. but good luck finding what the gauge is without cutting the wire open, most times it's just thicker outside insulation. And even with a 1000w power supply, that's only drawing about 10 amps from a 120v outlet on a 15 amp breaker, so there's absolutely no need for thicker gauge than 18 or 16 in the power cord especially for a 10' length or less. unfortunately I think having to buy a power cord from a store is like buying an hdmi cable, way overpriced. and i'm sure the money antec is saving by not supplying a power cord in no way has any influence, it's all for the environment
I personally have never seen a PC PSU cord with conductors larger than 14AWG. For the OP's PSU, a standard 16AWG is more than enough.
Yeah I'll never buy from radio shack again. Bought something there for like $29.99 and went to walmart a few days later and saw the same thing for half the price. I was like WTF dude.
they come in either 16 or 18 gauge and either the SVT (light duty) jacket or SJT...all are 105C temp rated and VW-1 vertical fire tested
