FX5200 (At least that is what i would do). You get DirectX 9 and OpenGL 2.0 fully supported in the chip in hardware while with the GF3 you get up to DirectX8.

But i really think that a CPU or more RAM would help you better than a GF FX5200.

I'd get atleast a 5400 if you plan on upgrading, the 5200 I read can barely take on Ti4200's and Geforce4 MX's, but I'm sure somebody is gonna come along to say "No, you're wrong, 5200 is based on GeforceFX so it rules". But believe me, 5200 sucks.

    Yeah, I agree w/ incognito.
    I mean...it doesn't even have a fan...just a heatsink...
It's not bad of a card...but then, if you're really planning to upgrade, I think u'd want to go up a level...or else what's the point u know?
No one's going to buy a Pentium 3 when we have Pentium 4s now.
You can try to find some benchmarks or specs on the 5200. There are some pros tho...like it supports 8x (which doesn't really matter that much at this point) and it supports dx9.

the only upgrade worth it I would say is a ATI 9500 Pro. Its faster than a 5600 Ultra and costs a few bucks less.

Well i've flashed my GF3. It flashed ok but it wouldn't work 100% so i reverted to the old BIOS. A Rad however flashed perfectly. (Or it could be my luck ;))

An FX5200 NON ULTRA comes with a heatsink only. (At least the cards i saw came with just a heatsink.)

I've only seen one, it had only passive cooling, no fan...

Looks to me like another Mx series from the specs.

At least it is Dx9, though it doesn't seem to be powerful enough for most current games at high resolution with max detail, let alone future Dx9 games...

Well,sorry.....maybe I am mistaken but,at the PNY site for the FX 5200 PCI version it says it has a heatsink and fan but, maybe that's just for the PCI or I'm just wrong.Since,I've never seen one maybe I shoulda just kept my friggin' mouth shut,eh?

maybe it does have a fan...if there isn't, u can always put one one :) Then there is on.
    If I didn't see a real 5200 card...i'd think it has a fan too...since it's FX!!!...haha

The guys that are saying the 5200 sucks actually own the card? Probably not... I got the Asus 5200 non-ultra with 128DDR, and it has the gold spiral like heatsink and fan you see on their ti cards. The card runs very nice. Runs UT2003, Splinter Cell, Black Hawk Down, Unreal 2, NWN and other high end graphic games beautifully and no slow down. I run All of them with the highest settings, I just like to run my games at 1024x768. So the card is kick butt for the price.

If you want something good, try to find yourself the radeon 9500 non-pro with the "L" shaped memory chip pattern cause a tweak can turn them into 9700's. But hard to find those 9500's...

But anyways, the 5200 is nice.. Hell, I even used it on the Doom 3 alpha leak and it ran at 45 FPS. I've seen ti4200's not even get 30 FPS....

Phacier, we read reviews and most say the 5200 is basically a step above the GF4MX 440/460, while at other times it can take on the Ti4200's, but rarely and barely.

    Go here http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030311/geforcefx-5600-5200-03.html#unreal_tournament_2003

You can clearly see that the GeforceFX 5200 Ultra gets pummeled by the Ti4800's and Ti4200's running UT2k3. I don't even wanna imagine what the regular GFX 5200 scores in comparison.

Also to strengthen the point, I'll point you're attention here http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030311/geforcefx-5600-5200-08.html

Here you can see that even in Serious Sam:SE the GFX 5200 Ultra can't pull in more than 60 FPS basically. That says something, it says that it's a slow card

Also, if I can point you're attention here for one final point http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030311/geforcefx-5600-5200-05.html

The GFX 5200 Ultra can't break 19 FPS with max details on Splinter Cell at 1024x768 on a Athlon 2700+.

Phacier you're standards of smoothe gameplay must be extremely low because the GFX 5200 just plain sux at running new games at playable FPS.
