    Hello to all ...
a question that maybe you have much more experience than i have ...

Is it worth going GTX580 SLI at 1920x1200 resolution? ( i have a Asus GTX580 Direct CU II ).

I did and never looked back ... ;0)

Crank everything up to very High in EVERY game, and sit back and relax ...

No more spending hours trying to make a game run proberly ;0)

    Enjoy ... ;0)

I am 1920x1080 resolution. going with a 2600k, 8 gb 1600mhz ram, 2 580`s, 1200watt corsair. is your psu the one with 2 seperate 500w psu`s under the hood? I know its overkill right now but I may be looking to get a bigger lcd in the near future. plus I want to get into benchmarking more too.

Ok... just to add more info ... i have this possibility of getting the 2nd GTX for a great price... although, it's still not cheap of course... and i was thinking if it would be worth it or not :)

I know that only above 1920x1200 you get about 60% scalability ... but, as i said, in terms of graphic cards my experience is not much since i bought the GTX295 in 2009 and and it still was able to play all games with good frame rates :p

I have a Corsair HX1000 ... do you think it will handle well the 2x GTX580 clocked and a i7 clocked?

your psu is actually 2 psu`s in one box I assume its the 1 with 2 12v rails. Dont think 2 580`s should be run on that psu. (from what I read). Ill let some other people chime in on that for more opinions
edit it may be doable but not optimal for sli 580

I've red that too somewhere. Might want to check. Each rail gives you 500 watt of power. The rail with Oced CPU and Oced Gpu is not going to pump enough power there.

depends on the game. with some of guru3d's benchmarks, they were still CPU bottlenecked at that resolution and only managed 33-40% scaling on some games. with games that are less cpu dependent like metro2033 and dirt2, the framerate increase was quite notable.

So... just checked an my Direct CU II can touch the 400W when clocked!!!! :x bummer... there goes my HX1000 down the drain ... ( The Direct CU II can have the power limiter disabled )

    With a i7 @ 4.5 ... and two of these babies ... the HX1K will be begging for "fresh air" ... :x

So, but talking about "stock values" for the gpu's ... max power consump. per card is 305W

    So i will have 610W for the 2 cards... do you think the 390W can be enough for the 4.5 i7 + HDD's + 10 140mm fans + 1 180mm fan + 1 120mm fan? ( water cooling )

Sorry for these questions ... i know its "stupid" questions but i was just thinking about this and i got pretty doubtful ... :x

90% of games you will be able to play with one 580 but if you want a constant 60fps in games like metro with everything turned on max you will need another 580.

Personally i would get another as you never can have too much power.
When the 590's come out i plan to get 2 of those, even though i wont need that power all the time, its there for when i do need it.

i think that our power supply (corsair hx1000w) cant handle 2 gtx580s and overclocked i7 :(
when i had i7 @4ghz with 2x 5870 i had no problem no matter how i connected my power for gpus
but when i switched to 1 gtx580 and had it on the same rail with i7 it was to much
my power supply would just cut off when i loaded a heavy game or 3dmark
then i switched power to second rail and its fine now
so if was to add second gtx580 psu wouldnt handle it
basicly 2 rails with 500w sucks in this scenerio
on the other hand corsair ax1200 would be perfect :) but thats like $300

ehehe i'm not throwing away a HX1000 ;) If it's able to get the 580 SLi up and running perfect if not ... i will forget the SLi in a blink of an eye! ehehe

    :x Oh well ...

Starting to think if i should return the GTX580 and get 2x560 eheheh :x I won't go higher than 2 cards on the system ...

if your i7 is overclocked to like 4ghz your psu wont be able to keep up with 2 gtx580 because in my situation one rail couldnt handle overclocked cpu and gpu
i think one gtx580 is enough for now anyway, coming from 2x5870 i would not go back

Your Corsair 1000 will be enough for 580 sli.

actually, it might not be if he plans to overclock it.

the corsair hx1000 is a dual rail PSU. one of the 12V rails is shared between the mobo, CPU and GPU. that rail cannot exceed 500w. so if he overclocks both his cpu and the gpu, this rail would be stressed out a fair bit. the other rail holds the second gpu and all peripherals.

its quite an unusual design. i dont see why corsair didnt just dump everything into the same rail.

Yeh if the cost isn't a big deal then I guess u can justify it but seriously it quite overkill at our res
