Yeah I figured I'd go for it as no instruction was saying whether it was safe or not to switch the bios's whilst powered up.
Either way I've tried 3 different bios's now and the result is the same - rendering failures. I can replicate it every time by trying the windows Start button, as soon as I click on it the whole screen flicks to white and black lines.

Once flashed back to the original bios all is fine though.

yea that sucks, mine worked flawlessly and took less then a minute to do.
Have you tried unlocking without changing frequencies or mem timings etc?..
Some who have had issues using 6970 bios can opt for this method and it seems to work for them.

Yeah, I found a bios in the techpowerup discussion thread which unlocks the shaders but leaves everything else as standard. This works flawlessly so far.

It's definitely the memory though, using MSI afterburner and pushing the memory clock to 1350MHz causes exactly the same rendering issues I was getting with a fully on 6970 bios

I'm not sure, I'll have to have a look later as I'm at work now :(

Just had a look at the box and it has ver 1.2 on it. I'm not sure whether that's the number you were after.

    Got a VTX3D 6950 today.

Tried flashing it with Atiwinflash and saphire 6970 bios = doesn't work
Tried flashing it with Atiwinflash and powercolor 6970 bios = doesn't work

Tried switching it to bios 2 and then back again (with restart) = doesn't work

Moving the card to the other slot = doesn't work

It just keeps giving me the 'Cannot Erase ROM' massage over and over again.

Tried looking for an actual VTX3D 6970 bios, but none seems to exist, even though the card exists.

Does anyone have any suggestions to get this thing working?
    I'm dying here

you must use unlockrom command before first flash.

    - Unpack the Winflash download onto your desktop in a folder called "winflash"
    - Save the 6970 BIOS in your Winflash folder and name it unlock.bin
    - Click Start Button
    - Type "cmd"
    - Right click the entry and select "Run as Administrator"
    - Black command prompt windows opens
    - Type "cd %USERPROFILE%\desktop\winflash"
    - Type "atiwinflash -unlockrom 0" <-- the 0 means first adapter, if you have multiple cards, physically uninstall all but the one you want to flash
    - Type "atiwinflash -f -p 0 unlock.bin"
    - It should complete the flashing process with a message saying something with "verified".

I have had my XFX 6950 running just fine with the modded bios which only unlocks shaders and have been running 880/1375 but I got bored and decided to flash to the full 6970 bios and I used the script on Techpowerup to flash the card but now my default clocks are 800/1375....they should be 880/1375 right? Any ideas on what's happened and what I should do?

EDIT: nvm it seems an extra restart fixed it...weird

I'm in a situation where I can't remove my cards physically since they're installed in my water loop. If I change the number to 1, will my second 6950 card then be the one affected? I need to unlock my slave 6950 in my crossfire setup, because I want to unlock both cards.
My master 6950 unlocks perfectly though. Assumably the one called #0.

I can just confirm myself in the theory. So if you have the HD6950 in a Crossfire setup and want to unlock both cards without pulling them in and out psysically, than you can just flash your slave card (the 2nd card) by using 1 instead of 0.

(I used a modding tool to just unlock shaders and nothing more, because of the memory timings ruining the card when using a plain HD6970 bios. Plus it limits overclocking when you use the HD6970 BIOS.)

easy if you set something silly like 1.5v in rbe and save the file it will read out as something like

    250-500-900-1375 bios.bin

its locked at 1.375 unless you go mad with hardware mods(which im thinking of doing) :)
