Guys, I'm considering an 'upgrade' to a single HD6870 from my current HD3870cf setup and was wondering if I'll notice a significant performance increase in games like Crysis (and soon to be released Crysis2). I running 4g ram and a Q9550 at stock speeds. tx
It'll be really significant when you compare performance to games that did not utilize crossfire really well. Regardless you will probably notice a decent boost in most games. Just one HD 5770 outperformed two HD3850 cards running in crossfire, if that gives you any idea what to expect, since the 3850 and 3870 cards were not far off from each other performance wise.
crossfired 3870's perform like a 5770 , i know i did upgrade from crossfired 3870's to a single 5770 then crossfired the 5770
I've heard the 5870 may be the best single card solution and the 6870 matches the 5870 but uses less power. So amakusashiro, you've got the 5770... is the 5870 much quicker than the 5770?
Then a single 5770, yeah. Two 5770 in crossfire is a different story. If the game is well optimized for crossfire driver support wise, then the answer is no.
I am doing just that ... 3870's to 6870's Hi! welcome to your answer, I had Sapphire Toxic HD 3870 and Visiontek HD 3870 in CF. My Sapphire overheated so my replacement was just one MSI R6870 Twin Frozr II Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5. On my system just 1 HD 6870 ran just short of the HD 3870 CF setup. Compared the 3DMark 06 and 3DMark Vantage scores to the old 3870's CF as had 28 scores available /stored at Futuremark (3DMark.com) So yes HD 6870 CF will give you at least 60% performance boost over HD 3870 CF. Here is the Catch ... until AMD/ ATI fixes the many problem with their current Drivers for the 68xx / 69xx series. You are almost better off leaving the HD 3870's CF in your PC. Latest Catalyst 10.12 don't cut the mustard or cheese.
Wasnt the 3870 a little bit faster than 8600GT? Between 8800GS and 8600GT? Had 320 shaders or something like that? In that case, a 4870 or 5770 (both 800 shaders, higher gpu clocks, friggin faster memory, etc). should perform as a CF of those Since a 5870 its a double up of 5770, and that a 6870 its mano a mano with the 5870. Hell yeah that a single 6870 its gonna be faster than that CF setup, even could be faster that a "QuadFire" of 3870s lol. The first FEAR could drive that kind of setups (CF SLi of anything below 8800GT) to its knees with AA...
The 3870 was just behind the 8800GT in performance. The 4850 is almost twice as fast and the 4870 is almost exactly 3870X2. So yes, 6870 SHOULD be a fair amount faster than Xfire 3870's. Just reference this graph for how the 3870's stacked up:
