So i'm now joining the fight!!, not a heavy folder, but a folder nevertheless!!

Running GPU & CPU clients in the background as I muck about on the computer!!

Sure its been mentioned before, but is there a portable client I can carry about on a usb stick and fold from elsewhere without installations??

Welcome to the team Li4m79, From your signature, I am guessing that you are running the SMP2 BETA Client v6.30 and the GPU2 or GPU3 BETA Client? If not, I would suggest running them and feel free to ask any further questions.

Regarding a "portable" F@H Client, I have asked it on the official forum so lets see what responses we will get. Thread link.

UPDATE - You can use the F@H Classic Console Client as portable. However you should first configure it and you must have written permission to run the Client on any system that isn't yours. It will then continue to fold the WU on the system(s) using 1 CPU only regardless of how many it has.

    cheers!!

not using smp yet, but I think i'll look into that over the next couple of days.

just running the basic "tray Icon" and GPU2.

    Will GPU3 run on mine??

And a quick Q with SMP, will that be ok to run whilst I do other things on my pc?? or will it require all resources???

The tray Icon is called Systray. Your 9800 GTX+ does support GPU3 but I won't really recommend upgrading the Client since there isn't any real need.

SMP2 detailed guide that I wrote will help you for your setup. Now, you can use your system for normal work, however, I found that the best setup on my system is to run the SMP2 Client with -smp 7 flag so I have 1 CPU free for my applications and it doesn't effect the folding that much. If you can tell us your computing habits, we can give you better suggestions.

I surf a lot, and i game a wee bit too, but not extreme gaming, maybe couple of hours here and there etc, I also don't keep my computer on 24/7 but when its on its on for a good few hours before i turn it off.

Also use office a lot, for word etc.

I installed gpu3 before i read your post, but it seems to be fine, also got smp installed and have that running. Think i'll keep it as is just now, as i've not had any problems yet.
I'll keep monitoring my progress and %'s and temps. and adjust accordingly...

Thank you for all your help and advice, appreciated man :)

well, surfing isn't a big deal. Some gaming is fine but remember to either pause the GPU Client or exit it. For the SMP, i prefer to exit them.

If your system isn't 24/7 then I would see if you can return the SMP2 WU before the Preferred Deadline. Maybe you can use the -oneunit flag if your system is on for 16 hours. That way, you will get the most Bonus Points as your Client won't be "holding" the WU while powered down.

Remember to use HFM.NET to monitor the Clients.

Yesturday I had 2h break on folding and made over 10k PPD.

So its close to normal 12-13k PPD ....

its only 2days since i flashed my GPU to better 470 BIOS.

My PPD is getiing higher slowly... It will end up 12k.... I fold 22-24/7
    I use Vista x64 premium.. not 7

here is 1 screnshot when im folding... Is it bad performance??

Dude, please avoid using the viewer because:
    7) The Viewer that is present in the Systray Version is known to be buggy/resource hog. You don't have to run the viewer for the Client to fold and it isn't used to monitor the Client. To monitor the Client, please visit the tools list and download an appropriate application.
Plus the viewer "steals" valuable GPU resources so you PPD will be negatively effected by this :(

BTW the installation procedure for Vista and 7 are the same for SMP2 BETA Client v6.30 :)
