Hi Guru-members, I've been a long member but I don't post much ... but now I need some advice. Currently I have: Asus P5Q pro QX9650 @ 3,8 ghz 4 GB DDR2 800Mhz GTX 285 SC Windows 7 64-bit Corsair TX750 Antec 300 What I want to upgrade ----------------------- The videocard. I've been waiting for some time now to upgrade it because I didn't like the GTX 480. With the launch of the GTX 580 it does look good to upgrade. I play on 1920x1200 with all AA and AF enabled. I play old games like Anno 1404, Mass Effect 2 but want to play some DX 11 games like Metro 2033, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and so on I have no intention of doing an SLI of CFX. I always stay on one card. Might use the GTX 285 as a physx card but maybe that's useless. Why do I want to upgrade ------------------------- I love to put everything on the max in games. Not very smart but I just love to upgrade so I'm doubting to upgrade because maybe it's time to replace my whole PC. Thinking of buying an Core I7 DDR3 and so on. What are your thoughts on this? I have to say my GTX 285 is doing fine for the moment. I know I can wait and wait because something better always will come out. Will my QX9650 be a bottleneck for the GTX 580? If you need more info, I'll update this first post as you reply. Thanks in advance.
To be honest i think you can just upgrade your Graphics card to a 580 your CPU at that frequency will be enough to feed it. Replacing your whole rig however i wouldn't do considering SandyBridge is right around the corner, you can always update your platform early next year when its released. Having already got yourself the 580.
^ this, upgrade to the 580 (I am when prices hopefully drop), but I'd keep the rest until Sandy Bridge comes out
Hi all, Thanks for all the replies. I will have a look into the GTX 580. I'll keep the rest then until next year. Thanks for the help guys. I'll let you know how the GTX 580 will handle my rig Will it be possible to keep the GTX 285 as a physx card on my mobo? I know I can't SLI but maybe I can keep the GTX 285. If not, I'll sell it.
as far as i'm aware there is some sort of driver hack/mod that will let use use your 285 as a physx card, but for me i would sell the 285 to recover some of the money you'll be shelling out for the 580.
You can use the 285 for physx with no problems since their both nvidia GPU's, but you'll bottleneck the 580 as your motherboard only supports PCI-E 8x/8x with 2 gpu's. Cheers
