Hello from Germany, I have a question about a upgrade from HD4850 Crossfire to HD6870. What do you think about the Performance? Is the HD6870 faster than the old Crossfire combination? Thanks
They're really damn quick. I'll see what I can find out. 4850 xfire is between 5 and 25% slower than 4870 xfire. (The 512MB 4850 cards are quite a bit slower in some games) 4870x2 1GB is around the same performance as 5770x2 1GB. Look for 5770x2 1GB or 5870 1GB single card DX9 & DX10 reviews and subtract 5 to 25% off the framerate. Compare that to the 6870 1GB.
the 6870 should be slightly faster than the 4850x2 setup. my logic is a 5870 performs similarly to a 4870x2, which is notably faster than a 4850x2. a 6870 is slightly slower than a 5870, so it should be faster than a 4850x2 but slightly slower than a 4870x2. or something like that. if you want a big improvement, wait for the 6970 to come out in 2 weeks or so.
Thank you, ive got the HD6870 now. In synthetic benches it is slightly faster than the two HD4850 (512Mb) In games it is much faster. Extreme in GTA IV, difference of Day & Night.
Yeah, 512MB vram was limiting you a lot especially in GTA IV, to max the settings you need around 1.4GB vram !
I´m currently in a similar situation. I am 100% sure that I am going to go with a single card config (waiting for 69XX) mostly because crossfire scaling is quite bad with most new releases. Even if a 6870 turns out to be a bit slower than 4850 X 2 (have no idea if that is true or not), the main difference to me is that at least most of the time I could use the 6870 to it´s fullest potencial while currently I have to wait a while before crossfire is supported in new releases.
+1. It's exacly between HD5850 and HD5870, but more to HD5870. Don't forget its quieter, draws less power, and produces less heat.
For 69xx , i guess u required a better psu as well .. And yes, from 2x4850 to single 6870 is not a huge update ...
theorically 6xxx have a little power to get released via drivers... (they are new after all). Problem with 6870 its overclockability? (they were rumoured to be near limits, but idk :$) Im also looking to do the jump. But my case its easy, 6870 = 2x 4770 or better . Nvm he already bought it c1:
A single 4850 uses approx 152W so 2 is around 300W under load, a little less for the 512MB cards.
