    Hey people,
after tons of searching for benchmarks, reviews, and relative comparisons between the gaming 4870 1GB and the Workstation v4800 1GB, I was able to acquire a real FirePro v4800 (thanks to a client). The comparison is on my blog at http://loklomedia.com/blog/2010/07/compare-radeon-hd4870-to-firepro-v4800-in-3ds-max/ including the unboxing video which is on Youtube.

It doesn't like my Asus P5N-MX motherboard - not sure why yet. It could be that the card is PCIe 2.0, and my board doesn't support 2.0 directly, or something else. (which means I can't overclock my CPU - It gives me a BIOS/POST warning, but allows me to continue booting in to windows with Default settings).

bottom Line for performance: not much different than the 4870 in 3DS Max - but much quicker for wireframe mode - the gaming cards/drivers are not optimized for wireframe. Transparency is much more accurate, but only in smooth+highlights+edges.

Barely worth the upgrade, worth it for a new build. might be better with proper motherboard... who knows.

test machine config and more details and pics in the blog post.

edit: using a different machine than what's in my specs on the side <<--

    @loklo3d :

I don't have vray, so I'm not sure how that affects the proper display of textures, etc.

    Using Max Design 2010 x64 on q9550@ 3.2ghz (400x8) with 6GB PC2-6400@400, and Firepro v4800 in PCIe x16 2.0 on a dual screen setup (both 1680x1050) - Max taking one full screen.
    Missing VRAY:
Wireframe mode only - roughly 2.5 FPS
Smooth + Highlights - 80-90 FPS - but all is black, due to missing vray plugin
Smooth + Highlights + Edged Faces - 30-40 FPS, again, all black, plus wireframe colors.

Generic MR Mats, showing about 3 in Viewport:
    Wireframe - ~2.6FPS
    Smooth+Highlights - 30-40 fps
    Smooth+highlights+edged faces - 12-30FPS

What do you get on yours?

    3Ds Max 2011 x64 (win7 x64) on T1055 default (2.8*6) with 4GB PC2-6400@ 1066 cas5, and Radeon HD4850 in PCIe x16 2.0 one full screen 1680x1050.
    VRAY:
Wireframe mode only - roughly 1.9 FPS
    Smooth + Highlights - 72 FPS
    Smooth + Highlights + Edged Faces - 35 FPS

Default Scanline Mats, showing about 3 in Viewport:
    Wireframe - ~1.9FPS
    Smooth+Highlights - 88 fps
    Smooth+highlights+edged faces - 42 FPS

Not test with XP , but I know it's much more faster than Win 7.:banana:

    3Ds Max 2011 x64 (win7 x64) on T1055 3.92ghz (280*14) with Megahelems , 4GB PC2-6400@ 1120 cas5, and Radeon HD4850 in PCIe x16 2.0 one screen 1680x1050.(3dsMax window not full because tested before this post for a several weeks)
