Since the 470 is running so hot and loud (room temp is 80-85F), the temp when load is 95-101C (Fan: 95-100%). I OC it to 750MHz. I'm about to sell it and buy 5870.

How hot and loud would the 5870 with my room temp? Would the fan be loud? I want to OC 5870 also to at least 900-950MHz.

    Thanks.

I used to have a 295 and i can tell you, boy o boy did it overheat. My 5870 runs idle at 30c and usually hangs at 50c to 60c full load.

do you have an updated bios revision for that 470? The later ones are supposed to run cooler by 10-15c.

I have a 5870 and it does run battlefield faster than the gtx480 i also have. but, the features of the gtx470 and 480 (16x-32x msaa - csaa - csaa+) can't be matched by 5870. maybe the toxic 2gb edition could.

gtx470 has a lot more to offer, remove the backplate and gain 5C. its worth it.. my gtx cards in hot 85F basement never get above 80C anymore. at first, w/ lame fan profile and full backplate, it hit 95-98C, blipped to 105C a couple times with messed up fan profiles on afterburner.

    get the 470 foo!!

I say that if the heat and noise is the issue. Get the HD5870. It will deliber the same performance, more or less, and less noisy. Maybe you can get some nice aftermarket cooler edition wich could OC even better than default.

And then, if you need more power, drop in another HD5870 and you're done for a while. With a little hope, 5xxx cards will go down after refresh or whatever comes at the end of the year. Cuz the price didnt drop a **** since months. My card is 10 bucks more expensive than when i bought it (february, january or something).

Well if it has a shroud over it. Not too bad on the noise front.
And then when its spins up will be further loud.
At this momment nVidia cards are louder and hotter then Ati's for the most part.

40 C idle around 70 C load, fan on auto, usually it's around 28% in games, barely can hear it..room temperature around 25 C..
    hd5850 OC to hd5870 speeds..

Here's a little test, with the case side-door off.

    -Stock HD 5870
    -Room temp 25C
    -BFBC2 for 3 hours
    -GPU temp 75C
    -GPU fan 30%

At 2ft away it's fairly quiet even with my speakers on the lowest setting.

If you were to overclock definitely get a non-reference 5870 as the stock one starts to get loud at anything above 30%.

But..as others have said it's probably best to stick with the 470 and get a 3rd party cooler.
