Both the 5850 and the 460 1gb version are good cards for the price. However, you must be liveing under a rock if you think the 460 is as fast as a 5850. I do not think the 5850 will come down in price because of the above reason ( it's faster ) I know if I was amd I would not lower the price.

Of course its not as fast as a 5850 but its only around 5% slower overall, as its faster in some games, and slower in others, for similar or less money.

There is only a big gap between them when comparing against the slower stock speed, and much cheaper 768mb versions.

My sonic beats the 5850. Crack is not your friend.

actually it doesnt. not in every game. some games favour nvidia and some ati. we know this :)

but if you have to choose between the two atm def 460 is a winner. great little card.

Be serious guys, neither card destroys the other, we are talking 0-5fps difference in 90% of the games reviewed, with both cards taking turns winning.

The only appreciable difference is with Far Cry2, and that is a game that runs so much faster on Nvidia cards, that im not sure it should even be used to compare cards anymore.

Your pre-overclocked card comes close in some games but hey, you're forgetting people can overclock their 5850 too

Sonic is overclocked, its at 800, most people will only be able to get it to 900 when overclocked by yourself.

When its comes to 5850, you're really looking at 5870 performance, as it is effortless to get 5870 peformance out of it and it will overclock even further.

Don't get me wrong gtx 460 is great little card and if you had nvidia before i'd recommend to go with gtx 460 but otherwise 5850 is still greater card as far as I see it.

All I have to add to this is that is you go SLI/Crrossfire, two GTX 460's destroy two 5030/5850's so you might want to keep that in mind as well.

with the Nvidia you get better driver support and Sli instead of crossfire.

Sure... but the main question is about thw answer of AMD/ATI to the GTX460, well... The GTX460 is a great card once it is overclocked, but the HD5850 goes so far as well, both cards seems to be the best price/performance now, for me this match is a totally draw.

Nvidia owners are known for this, they scream from the rooftops that their overclocked cards can beat stock ATi ones, they've been saying it for years and years now, and man is it bloody boring :D

Yes people its true, ATi cards do not have to remain at stock speeds, they can be overclocked to :p

Erm no it certainly won't destroy 5850 crossfire but will be on par with it

2 460's would not destroy my 5850's, but they are comparable.

My answer to the OP's question would be this, ATI does not really have an answer to the 460 because their range was released before the 460, not after it.

The only option for ATI is to consider altering its pricing. Not sure they will tbh as they have been doing very well recently with the entire 5*** series.

I think the real winner here is the 460 768Mb overclocked. Thats the real price/Perf king.

No one said they do have to remain at stock speeds.

They are getting compared because the overclocked ones are roughly the same price as the stock 5850's, at stock speed the GTX460's are a good bit slower, but they are alot cheaper.

Every review i've saw of factory overclocked 5850's doesn't seem to improve performance that much, and personal overclocks aren't relevant.

I could see then replacing the 5830 with a more powerfull mid range card if they wanted to. Most likely they will just lower the price or get rid of it like they did with the 2900gt.

Nope GTX460 1Gb oc is winner in every way! 20-30$ more then 768mb and quite faster.

If you're not going to overclock, gtx 460 factory overclcoked to 800 is on par with 5850 stock. (roughly same price)

If you're going to overclock them, 5850 offers better performance.

I wouldn't exactly say 460 is the kind of p/p but rather 460 and 5850 both are the choice to make if you're going for p/p.
