Hilbert's test can give us an idea how it may sound in the real world, testing right near the card simply gives you the simplest, least objective test. I however, prefer Hilbert's way of doing it, as it gives you a better idea what to expect compared to other things. Neither are wrong, just different.

I'm following this with interest as I currently have two in my PC and the top cards fan does kick up a bit. I can't hear it through my headphones, but its concerning.

    Does yours have heat pipes?

Mines the Sonic Plat, so yeah has 2 heatpipes, but no VRM cooling.

The non-Sonic Plats apparently have neither heatpipes nor VRM cooling.

mine has apparently missed the vrm assembly line area also.(bfd)
as for the fan being loud? i would not know first thing after opening the box was to take off the shroud and fan.was quickly replaced by two 120 fans no fuss.
after a tp change card now idles @29c loads up with kumbuster 65c
(67f amb.),vrm area has no monitoring but is "burn skin" hot.
the main issue i seem to be having is after -60c the damb thing cold bugs.
so i guess i have to get on the horn with palet to ask for a non cb bios?
or is there another modder that can help me with that?

Got my RMA number today, along with this:

"Problem / Fault description: Faulty [VRM heatsink missing - known problem"

It's gonna be massive recall i think, card's won't last long without vrm cooling.

    Excellent work.

So it does indeed that press samples are different to what actually goes to retail.

    Naughty Palit... very very naughty.

    just a quick question...

why does no single Card from the gtx 460´s has VRAM COOLING??
is there one out with ram cooling?
i really want one of these Cards, but i also want ram cooling so i can oc that baby..
is it posible to put some ram cooling thingys on the MSI Cyclone manualy?

some say its not needed for ddr5 anymore. but id say for OC it is needed...

    whats your opinions?

@ Hilbert, what are the Temps on the Rams will stressing the Cards?

The memory used on the GTX460 is spec'd for 4GHz, but downclocked to 3.6GHz.

So you should be able to quite safely take it to at least 4GHz without any need for memory cooling.

This card seems fine to me even without the vrm heatsink in this video.
    http://youtu.be/cLkP_1Ds854

Even the temp at idle is cooler than any card I have had in the last 3 years.lol

And do any of the other 460s have a vrm heatsink? Are they even needed?

    Posted this earlier.

Temps aren't the problem (well GPU temp anyway), it is the fan noise that is terrible.

Skip to 4:55, then listen to the fan noise at 80%, that's what you'll be hearing when gaming.

    Not nice.

The VRM's however get VERY hot without the heatsink on them, you literally can't touch them. That can't be good for long term survival of the card.

As for other cards, the KFA2 (Galaxy) card has a VRM block, as does the Gigabyte.

The MSI doesn't need them as it has a larger fan that blows directly down over them.

Don't know about the other cards.

That doesnt seem very loud at all to me?My gts 250 which I think is pretty quiet sounds louder than that at 80%.And I doubt that vrm heatsink does much at all since the fan blows air over the vrms anyway. And I dont think the evga 460s have any cooling in the vrms and they usually are the best overclocking cards.

Just because it isn't as loud as a REALLY loud card doesn't mean it isn't loud :D

If you think 80% is fine then you are willing to put up with a lot more noise than I am.
