this is what i went with if i decided to keep my i5 and my ram and got rid of my GPU, PSU, case, and mobo..... i might even keep my gtx260 for physx

 

Just to add to the CPU question in this thread, Hilbert's benchmark showed that with the right software AMD's X6 surpass i7's with ease. Of course this is in heavy multi threaded applications but it shows the power of multi cores. Of course, the i7 980 still beats the 1090 but for at what price?

These X6 have the possibility to dethrone Intel's dominance in the server market. That'd be a good thing, as the money AMD will earn will go into R&D, which is good for us.

 

Last check there are more AMD servers than there are Intel servers. I know at my college, except for the student programming server (for coding and compilation), all the servers either ran Sun SPARC processors or AMD Opterons.

The HP plant where I work builds servers, majority use Intel processors.

Westmere is hot stuff atm in the server world.

 

Today the general picture is like this:

AMD Cheaper than Intel (because

AMD only does dual channel memory, Intel does tripple Channel.

Intel has their turboboost, AMD only has a similar thing on their new 6 core chips i believe

Intel has their hyperthreading, whereas AMD focus more on simplicity and 3-4 core/threads

The above features doesnt mean that much at all for gaming performance.. which is why the majority of people with limited funds and no desire to do anything but gaming on their pc's will or should buy AMD (atleast if choosing between a i5-7 or Phenom II)

Whereas the geek that also does a lot of other stuff on pc's and may spend more on their general computer budget will usually tend to go for an intel cpu

Ofc this isnt always how it is.. or has been.. but between current cpu generations this is generally true

 

This is why Intel were fined. You should start to see more AMD servers appear, with the X6 CPU's.

Dunno what figure's you have been looking at lately, but intel nearly own 90% market share when comes to servers that come with intel or amd cpu's.

In the PC server/workstation processor segment, Intel came in with a 88.1% market share, a gain of 2.5 points and AMD at 11.9% (–2.5 points)

Cba to read all posts because it's a pretty stupid comparison but..
What I've noticed on benchmarks and reviews is that the Intel and AMD perform equally in games, only Intel is better at rendering and in applications and such, but costs 2x much, ultimately it's up to you.
I've never gone Intel just because I don't want to pay 600€ for a processor that has the same game performance than AMDs processor that costs like 300€.

Yeah but they might be 2 years through a 3yr lease...same goes for Intel though, you need to look closer than just what the market share is....

In NZ the roll-outs for Universities etc, are done every 3 to 4 years.

ah that's what it was lol, dunno i didnt see any diff in anti aliasing,.. when i use it I use max 4x, usually only 2xaa in recent games.
