It's just a qualified guess of course but I'd agree, the rather amazing SLI scaling would be an indication of such I believe.

Someone did mention that NVIDIA has less headroom for optimizations than AMD does due to their architecture. I don't know if there's any truth to that myself but it makes sense that AMD can squeeze out more performance by dividing out work between their 'simple' stream processors.

*shrug* Let's hope there are optimizations to be made anyway, regardless of vendor preferences, as that would encourage competition in pricing.

NVIDIA is already on there 3rd or 4th based Fermi because the others didn't perform the way it was meant to.
It's already been proven before Fermi's launch, after it's launch and during its massive delays we were already told that Nvidia's Fermi GTX480 is Broken, Unfixable, Hot, Slow, Late and Unmanufacturable with no backup plan in place because they spent way too much time and forgot about us gamers.

This was released in an article on Feb 17, 2010 and that info became a reality.

NVIDIA is an egotistical bull**** of a company that needed a reality check and finally got one. They also messed up the opportunity for ATI to drop their prices. Even AMD was expecting something in the lines of 60% +. Pathetic to say the least.

    o.k. :)
    We are back on topic.

It seems ATI will have 2 different types of GPU’s both built from the Ground Up. ATI may be working on two new architectures. (Northern Islands & Hecatonchires code-names). One may be based on heavy 3D & GPGPU while the other will be a pure gaming card.

As for the re-fresh there’s speculation that it may be called code name Southern Islands which will be based on the HD 5800 series with a taste of the new upcoming HD 6800 series. As per Charlie from SemiAccuate.

Here’s some links in reference to the HD 6000 series from ATI.

There won't be 2 completely different architechtures, one just is hybrid between Evergreen and Northern Islands. Logically called Southen Islands. Which also happens to be the 40nm "refresh" of Evergreen.

AFA rumors say, ATi switches from one big chunc of shaders to modules, which lets them double certain much needed things like tesselator etc. and make it tons of easier to scale to lower budget models.

The new HD 5870 equivalent would have two 800SP modules instead of a single 1600SP chunck, doubling certain things, probably removing some other bottlenecks as well.

Thats as much as there is out in terms of rumors. If they are really going to manage to get em out by Q4 this year, we'll hear more by summer.

Interesting analogy but how do you explain code name Northern Islands & Hecatonchires which don't sound like they are 2 of the same?

The summer is going to explain a lot more :)

They scrapped the 32nm plan, so... Still wondering where the Hecatonchires went? It went to trash bin along with TSMC 32nm process. ;)

It just looks like to have been replaced by more modest SI.

Why would I be joking? I assume the next time we hear something concrete about ATI's plans would be sometime in early summer 2010 IMO.

Here's another one that's not Fudzilla

AMD's Hecatoncheires GPU family codenames revealed ;)
    http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15918/34/

ATI next generation is codenamed Hecatoncheires :)
    http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15891/34/
    ---------------
    In My Opinion:
ATI Code Name: Southern Islands = Evergreen Re-fresh w/ elements of next gen tech @ a more efficient 40nm process. Should produce approx: 40% performance increase over HD 5870 and HD 5970.
ATI Code Name: Northern Islands = Next Gen - Built from the Ground up. w/ new 28nm process. Should produce approx: 75% to 150% performance increase over HD 5870 and HD 5970.
ATI Code Name: Hecatoncheires = Rumoured to be the code name for another Next Gen GPU. Can this be a Dual-GPU or even a Tri-GPU graphics monster  . It seems as though ATI plans on making their new GPU's smaller and more efficient, it can very well be possible for a Tri-GPU and even a Quad-GPU card. This can also be based on the GPU that will be part of the Fusion CPU/GPU.
Go ahead, speculate your hearts out please ;)

hahahahahahha this the most hilarious post ever seen around! 75% to 150% performance increase against current generation? seriously you think ATI is able to bring such a perfmance with a 28mm chip? The 28mm process, will be launched in 2011 and most probably ATI will end up like FERMI, lots of problems and late launch... bad drivers.. :puke2:
