I`ve recently bought a Sapphire HD 5970 OC. The first problem was that when i downloaded sapphire`s redline tool, it didn`t recognise my card. It`s saying that my card is not supported. It`s funny because it`s included with the card and the manufacturer claims it as an exclusive feature for this card. The weird thing happens when I`m trying to overclock it. I`ve managed to reach 940 core and 1310 memory with 1.1625 coreV and 1.15 memV set by the ATI overvolt tool while being Furmark stable(85C GPU1 and 80C GPU2 @100% fanspeed) for 30min. Then I decided to try this setup in 3D Mark 06, but it crashed in the Canyon Flight test. I lowered to 900/1250 but it crashed exactly at the same point of the test. The worst thing is that whenever I reboot, I have to apply the factory setting to apply the Voltage increase, because if I don`t, the system locks up completely. After setting the Voltage, I loaded the 940/1310 config from a catalyst profile. Whenever I try to run a 3D program after these steps, it results in a system lockup in some seconds. I can only increase the clocks gradually in 3D load to prevent lockup. Is this issue cause by hardware, drivers or BIOS ?

The oc is a bit high for that low coreV.

    its not the H/W.

firstly to get ''redline'' working you need to run it as ADMIN

for the instability you need to up the voltages.......... i believe the ''ATI Overvolt tool'' has a specific voltage setting to get it to 850/1200 (5870 standard)

going above this is a bit of a problem as ''MSI AB'' will only overvolt the core & ive yet to find a voltage app which will do both voltages above (1.16v / 1.15v)

its early days, were still deep in the ironing out phase unfortunately :3eyes:

I think it`s ok cause it`s Furmark stable. I lowered the memory to 1250 and it works in games.

I think i`ll need more cooling do increase the V`s further. I hope arctic cooling will soon realease the accelero extreme for this card

i must admit these cards get bloody hot as soon as they go past stock, out of the box this card runs a chilly 35c idle & 52c load, but start OCing & you'll see 80c in seconds

the VRMs sit even higher @ around 110c, they better produce an aftermarket cooler that vents outside the case rather than coolers of old which cool the card well but dump it straight into the case...

I can get 850 on the core with 1.125, so maybe not, though every chip is different.

And what should I do with that Redline stuff? I can`t make it work.

forget about it & use the ''ATI Overvolt tool'' :)

MSI AB does a good job too.

But I can`t increase the Voltages more in the ATI overvolt tool. I can set it only 1.1625/1.15. Maybe I don`t have the correct version.

Thats the max it will let you, redline will work if you download the latest version from their website. It is the same as over volt tool though just different background anyway :3eyes:

To get more voltage use MSI Afterburner.

MSI AB wont alter RAM voltage AFAIK...??

think 1300 is pretty much the maxium on the RAM from what ive seen

Unfortunately, so you have to manually increase ram volts with ati over volt if you want memory overclocked far. I gave up and just stick to AB now until something comes out that can do both and save on reboot.

Max stable ram for me on stock volts is 1150, I can get 1300 with the boost in voltage but negligible increase in 3d mark so seems pointless anyway.
