just picked up a 4890 and i can get this this to run properly

heres the - it keeps crashing at startup

    round 1
yesterday i removed my uninstalled my nvidia drivers
    rebooted
    ran driver cleaner
    reboot,
    shut down
    installed the new card
    booted up
    installed ati drivers
rebooted and it freezes at the windows starting screen
    rebooted
doesnt freeze, but just goes to a black screen

    round 2
boot into safe - unistall drivers
    reboot
    install drivers
    same thing

    round 3
put the card in my second pci express and its boots up fine

    round 4
    boot into safe
msconfig - run turn of all startup except ccc
    reboot
get in no problem - run a couple of benchs
    60 fps res5, 51 farycry 2, :banana::banana:
so back into msconfig - turn everything back in
    same garbage all over again

Round 5 - figuring that the changes i made to the registry for my tri fire 3870 probably messed things up, i decided to reinstall

    installed win 64 7 ulitmate
bootup, restarted, installed drivers - same bs all over again.

reinstalled a 3870 - fine windows recognizes it

    Please Help!!! want to game!!

Card may need replaced as it may be reporting something wacky to Catalyst causing it to crash and burn. Strange everything works fine without CCC on startup though.

See if you can try the card in another system. Check your motherboards new BIOS changelogs, maybe there is an update for PCI-E card compatibility. If all else fails, I'd look into getting it replaced or get a refund and get something else.

yeah this is retarded -just unistalled again - deleted the card from device
disabled win 7 auto update in driver installation, reinstall drivers

then it said some like the install completed but with warnings

checked - but nothing in the log

    restarted - froze on startup
    restarted again and im in
ccc sees the card as a 4800 series, is that normal or should it read 4890?
gpuz also sees it as 4800??

then i restart and the ati overdrive option is gone.

Do a fresh re-install of windows. Often if you change gfx cards youre OS will get fubarĀ“ed. So best thing is fresh install of win7. Even if you use driver cleaners, the system can still get unstable.

I had the same issue with my old 4870X2, the problem ended up being my power supply. If you are overclocking your Q6600 try running it at default.

Also if you have more than one PCI-E socket have you tried the card in another socket???

No overclocking - i started out with just my trio and now ive added my Thermaltake Purepower Power Express 250W

the other day i had the following running with out a hitch and i was only using the antec trio

GTX 260 oc with a 9600 gt for phyx - ran beautifully
    also ran my 3870x2 +3870

now i add what is basically a second psu and it still not enough power

tried the second slot and it boots fine from there!

If a bios upgrade doesn't fix it, then I suppose it's the card.

Did you buy it from a store or it's used?

Have you tried resetting the motherboard BIOS, or as someone suggested running the latest BIOS?

    Guys here are my options

I already a 96oogt that I plan to use for phyx

    a 260gtx oc for $135
evga 280 gtx oc scc for $230
try another ati 4890 for $160

the plus if I go with the 280gtx is that I could sell the 9600gt

all the prices are exact no tax as the are used

I forget the name of the card now, but do you have a small card on the mainboard looking like laptop memory that you can take out and turn around for sLi mode x8 or x16 ?

I ran into a problem with someones machine a while ago and the only solution I ever found was to insert that card into x8 for a single GPU

So i picked up the second one from the guy - tested - same garbage

Looks like the issue is related to the Atikmda.sys blue screen issue that so many are having

cant seem to find a resolution though - any help would be appreciated

Could it be your mobo? You said that your 2nd PCI express slot boots it fine...maybe something is up with your first slot. Do the cards work on another Mobo?

first to confirm a few things: You get through boot sequence and see the windows logo, but after that the monitor goes black? some people (me included) cannot install drivers past 9.7 and some 9.8. something went wrong with the newer ones that puts the monitor out of sync (to high a refresh rate i think). Try doing a full uninstall and installing 9.8. you can get them off guru3d's server.

    Hi,

Try to change your Power Unit.

One of my friend had the exact same issue, since he changed is 650W for a 850W the problem is gone away.
